Shortest barrel allowed on AR pistol?

Is there a law on how short of a barrel you can put on a AR15 / AR9 pistol in Ca?

No limit on how short the barrel is. It could be 1 inch.

I believe that's correct... barrel could be so short on a pistol that the bullet tip could be sticking out of the muzzle... wouldn't be a good design, but there wouldn't be a legal issue with it.

Legal issues with AR platform pistols in CA, barrel length is the least of your worries.

You can, but I would avoid anything shorter than a 7.5" barrel. Stick to 10" or 11" IMO.

I don’t get the AK gas piston on the AR…. Except for with short SBR and pistols- the piston seems to run while the DI has some issues...

A friend had an ND into the bed of his truck. Back of the bed- just below the rear window.

It was a really short SBR and it dented the bed... his rifle did not puncture one side of the truck bed...... not enough velocity / energy...

My way of asking - how short is the limit to defeat the effectiveness of the round?

With .223/5.56/7.62- at what point will the bullet stabilize and at what length will it stop being lethal ?

I've heard that for a gas impingement system you really don't want to go below a 10" barrel. I've not heard that for a blow back system on an AR9 style pistol.
            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

                From the OP:

While I'm sure the comments on practicality, advisability and usefulness were all welcome info - OP was asking specifically about any legal issue.

Sure he was. I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Paperchasin's comment. Which was like hermosabeach saying:

I was thinking the same thing but, a 1" barrel chambered in .223 would be a SBS because, it wouldn't have any rifling.

Just the law of diminishing brains. Anything shorter than 10 inches in .223 is ridiculous wrt blast and noise.

There is a minimum barrel length requirement in order to qualify for the single-shot pistol exemption to CA unsafe handgun laws.

In order to be exempt, the pistol must:
                            1. have a barrel length of 6" or greater.
                            2. have an overall length of 10.5" or greater.
                            3. must operate as a bolt-action or as a break-open.
                            4. must be single-shot.
                            5. can never have been semi-auto.

There is a maximum barrel length requirement in order to be considered a "handgun" in CA.

If the firearm has a barrel length of 16" or greater, then it is not considered a "handgun".
If the firearm has a barrel length of less than 16", then it is considered a "handgun".
^A "handgun" can also be considered a SBR or SBS, if it meets the CA definition of a SBR or SBS.

my 10.5"s have been running flawlessly with DI - 5.56

Going under 10" is useless with a 5.56 . Use a .357 magnum if you want shorter than 10"
