applied for ccw and while i'm waiting i might as well start finding a good carry ammo. i've not bought 'defensive' ammo before so i don't have a point of reference. how much was speer gold dot before prices skyrocketed? looks like lax has some in stock at 63 for 50rds. is it worth stocking up or just sit tight?

Agreed.
OP.....Expect to pay $1 to $2 a round for the good stuff. (Gold Dot, HST, etc.)
Find the ammo that's best for your gun & stock up. It ain't going get any cheaper any time soon.
Good Luck.Comment

Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

2019 Speer Gold Dot was $20 for a box of 25 rounds.
Federal HST similar.
I stocked up on sig V Crown both 115gr and 124. The stuff expands very well in different materials, consistently. I paid $15 for a box of 20. But again, that was over a year ago.
If you are curious of cost thats ok. I’m often curious myself, however I learned that when it comes to defense ammo, its worth it to pay the money. Despite the great performance out of the sig v crown, I would rather haVe stocked up on HST for a bit more. That said, ammo prices always fluctuate. There is no guarantee that prices will always continue to rise. In fact, history tells us that ammo will decrease in price eventually. From 2013 to 2016 ammo prices dropped by 50% (roughly). Political policy may play a role, but typically those things take a while. Sorry for rambling, but buy what you can, be sure it runs in every gun you want it to, and hold on to it.Last edited by Mr. Blue; 05-11-2021, 3:21 AM.Comment

Yeah prices have gone up---especially practice ammo. But then, you'll probably buy just a fraction of that amount for defensive purposes---just find the ammo that runs 100% in your gun and shoots to point of aim (or can be adjusted to point of aim) and you're ready to go. Another method is to find out what ammo your local police use and buy that---easier to defend your choice in an actual shooting situation. Back when I was managing gun stores and carrying most every day, I always used whatever the local P.D. was using...Comment

In general HD/SD ammo costs twice as much as plinking stuff. It is no different with the current climate.Comment
