FN/Browning Hi-Power....any experience with trigger upgrades?

Hi, it's time to upgrade the Hi-Power....it's from the early 90s (so a Mark II/ Mark III series).

I'll be changing out the springs (it's time) and i'm considering upgrading some of the internals as well. There's some wear on the sear so that will go, I've always had good luck with EGW so i'll probably purchase one from George and the team.

I guess i'll replace the hammer at the same time as it directly interacts with the sear.

Certainly if there are any rough spots a judicious polishing is in order.

Well, if i'm already in there and replacing the springs and the sear and the hammer....i wonder if replacing the trigger is worthwhile?

Has anyone tried out a couple of the aftermarket triggers? Are you happy with your choice. So far i've identified several aftermarket trigger options (from Garthwaite, C&S and BH Spring Solutions in addition of course to stock).

I'm used to and enjoy a bullseye 1911 trigger feel and function however i appreciate that this is likely not a reasonable expectation for this format.

Lessening the very long trigger take up, improving trigger translation, break quality and a more definitive reset would be great. I'll take what i can reasonably and safely get.

The magazine disconnect feature doesn't bother me one way of the other. I'll certainly polish this interface if there's any suggestion of roughness.

thanks in advance for your advice and suggestions.

I have the C&S trigger in my MK3, big improvement, glad I did it. I did remove the mag disconnect in mine

I just installed the BHSS new trigger and pawl. Wonderful improvement.

A word of caution with the EGW sear, which I think is very nice. Get a new hammer as well. The EGW sear is much harder than the Browning hammer. You'll see accelerated wear mixing them.

IIRC if you get rid of the mag safety it cleans up the pull weight of the trigger.

Removing the magazine safety and using a lighter hammer spring did wonders for my beater FEG Hi Power. My MkIII has a great trigger with the removal of the magazine safety. I don't feel the need to do anything more to it.

I have an older Belgian C series Hipower from 1969 and all I had to do to get a decent trigger was remove the mag safety. Since I don't shoot it much anymore I haven't been keeping up with what's currently available for them, but I suspect that if you do the sear, a trigger and matching hammer would be a good thing to install at the same time.

thanks everyone...just really don't like the long take-up...wondering which if any of the after market options best addresses that

mtenenhaus to correct the take up you can weld up some of the parts to decrease the travel and refit.

I’ve been very happy with the BHSS trigger.

It’s wider, and feels more comfortable. The take up is reduced. The reset is more positive and you have different springs to get the reset feel/weight you want.

The new geometry and changed geometry of the pawl had a positive impact on reducing the trigger pull.

The install requires no modification to the pistol. On one of mine, I did a little stone work on the trigger body to smooth where it rubbed on the frame and you need to adjust the height and shape of the pawl for your frame rails and how it interfaces with your barrel. But the instructions provided in the kit and online are very clear and it’s very easy.

I now have these on all three of my HiPowers.

On my old Israeli Surplus Hi Power I ditched the mag safety, put new C&S springs and a Garthwaite trigger. Improved the trigger a lot, better reset and less takeup. Need to go all the way with fitted hammer and sear though

thanks...i like the look of the Garthwaite trigger but unfortunately haven't been able to find one...it's been on backorder at Brownells for quite some time
