Im new to AR Pistols and New to the AR platform in general. Sorry for the stupid question but what makes a AR pistol a pistol? is it the caliber or size?

Dimensions and lack of a stock.

Barrel length under 16" and an OAL less than 26".

Under CA law a pistol can even have an OAL over 26", under Federal law this is a Title One Other.

Without a suppressor, the AR pistol platform doesn't make much sense to me. It'll be high on my list to acquire if I set up an address in a free state.
