    XD 45 questions

I just picked one up about 6-7 months ago and I love it. Its a tank and eats anything I feed it. The main reason I bought it is I got it for a price you wouldnt believe if I told you and it was brand new. I really dont know much about this gun as you will see.

    Now my questions:
I like the trigger but I want something less then the 6.5-7 pound factory deal. What do you reccomend? Do they make anything for this gun?

I want to put a better barrel in it. Does anyone know if the XD M barrel is for sale? Is it any good? will it fit a standard XD?

The reason for my questions is I got the gun for so cheap that I want to spend the rest of the money I saved to mod it out. Or, Is it even worth it??

Is the gun one of those guns that should just stay the way they are because its just not enough benefit to mod it at all???

Like I said I dont know too much about this pistol so I'm hoping for a little help.

    Thanks,

Changing the barrel is pointless right off the bat in my opinion, you won't see any major improvement unless you're a very good shot. Shoot the gun. You can change the barrel out later once you're comfortable with it and shooting it to the best of your ability. The trigger can be worked on and improved, but it's not a drop in thing the way a Glock would be, and if you're not familiar with a bit of home pistolsmithing you're best having someone else do it. The links lioneaglegriffin posted above are a great place to start.

I'd suggest new sights and a trigger job. Something along the lines of Springfield's Carry package. You can of course step up for more, or pick your modifications. Look into those sights and the work they offer a bit and see what appeals to you. But I'd imagine that basic package (whether you have SA do it or someone else) is probably about what you're looking to spend and you would be happy with it.

I suggest Springer for the trigger. I sent Scott my tactical for a trigger job and sights. I went with a 3-3.5# pull weight . It has no pretravel and no overtravel. I like it a lot. He is also very quick at getting them back to you. It took all of 6 days including travel to get it back in my hands.

Not to hijack the thread but i have a similar question, specifically about the SP trigger job. Will it affect reliability in any way, no in the sense of accidental discharge but in terms of what types of ammo can be used? I thought i read somewhere that you could not use CCI or WWB ammo with a springer precision job because the primers are too hard.

I would suggest the Powder River Match Target kit. Very very nice trigger and about $70 shipped to you (actually, just checked, they've gone up a bit). About an hour of your time and it's done. Put new mag springs in from AGP. Figure out which night sights you'd like and you've got a very complete XD45.

I went the SA way to keep any warranty issues "in house," so to speak. Had there Custom Carry Package done to one of my XDs and am very happy with it now for about 2 years. Prices have gone up and so has the turn around time from the factory.

I also have been thinking about sending a couple of my XDs to Springer and seeing if things would turn out pretty nice. BTW, congrats on the .45 XD, nice pistol.

Just to address any confusion this may cause, SA will honor the lifetime warranty on the pistol despite a home trigger job. They will not, obviously, warrant anything that has to do with the replacement parts.

Probably some of the best advice yet. Thank you. I was waiting for someone to say that. I have never been trained on this pistol but I have taken many classes. Is this pistol different enough from a glock and 1911 that going to a class specialized for XD will teach me something new?

I handled this gun the other day, I like it, it felt good in the hand, nice balance, and looked great. I think you will be very happy with your choice.

From what I understand is the XDM is .5 inch longer barrel then the standard XD so it will not fit.
