I used to have a Model 18. It isn't even the fancy Smith .22. It has a plain ramp front sight and a short barrel.

Model 18s are much rarer than Model 17's in my experience. I like them both. The 17 is a target revolver with it's 6" barrel and patridge sights, and the 18 is a .22 version of a classic combat revolver with its 4" barrel and ramp front. Both share the same action and finish.

Sounds like the old man has done some research and is looking for top dollar.

They'll send you another mortgage bill.

They won't send you another Smith model 18.

You consider a different front sight and two more inches of barrel "fancy"? Unles you're talking about more modern versions of the K22 that fire more rounds and might have a full length barrel lug that aren't as interesting as the earlier ones.

Seems so. There goes my "hand him a bag full of gold foil chocolate coins & tell him they're double eagles" approach.

                    I got this Model 18 on Gunbroker.com in 2017 for $582 + $25 shipping to my FFL.

                    .
                    Revolvers are not pistols

pistol nouna handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel
Calling a revolver a "pistol" is like calling a magazine a "clip", calling a shotgun a rifle, or a calling a man a woman.

With the chip in the grip, no box or papers and with the cost of DROS and any PPT fees, I'd offer $750.

And that's a very nice revolver, no turn line, great blueing, no chip stock. There's a big difference from the description between the two.
I think that $700 would be a good offer.
By the way, unless its going out of State or locally, shipping intra-state cannot happen, even FFL x FFL. Something to think about.

I would try to talk him down to 700 - 750 range.

At the range not long ago I shot a 1980 nickel Model 19 .357 and an early 1890s S&W New Model #3 .44 Russian that was converted to .22 in. The 1920s. Both great shooters though the sights on the old one are very small yet precise.

Recently I took my 1901 Model 1899 Target Model out and ran a few rounds of wadcutters through it. At the same outing I shot a couple of cylinders of .357 magnums through my ’64 Model 28.

I have to admit that since my newest Smith was made in 1984, it would be hard for me to shoot one that isn’t vintage.
