    357

    I have a S&W 357 Magnum. Four inch barrel.
    How do I find out the "type of" Frame I have?
    I have read of @3 different frames..
    What size frame do I have?

    Do you know what model you have?

    Otherwise, picture might get you there.

      Open the cylinder and look at the inside of the frame under the barrel.

          Can't tell you without the model number. Do you know where the model number is?

          Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

              the model is stamped on the frame, open the cylinder and look...
              TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
              The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
              Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
              Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
              The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
              The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
              The best lack all conviction, while the worst
              Are full of passionate intensity.

                If it's a 357, the rule of thumb is: 5 shots is J, 6 is K, 7 is L and 8 is N.

                I don't know of any J frame that isn't a 5 shot and any N frame that isn't an 8 shot. There might be a K frame that is 5 shot since there is one (I believe) in 44 magnum, but that would be an exception. K and L frames are very similar.

                  Where did you come up with that? There are lots of .357 N frames that are of the six shot variety:

                  Model 27,
                  Model 28,
                  post war, pre model number ".357 Magnum
                  pre war non registered magnum
                  pre war registered magnum.

                  All only hold six shots. In fact there are even some .38 special six shot N frames also, Pre war .38/44 Heavy Duty and .38/44 Outdoorsman, post war pre Model 20 and 23 and M20 and M23

                  I know it's only because the OP isn't knowledgeable about guns, but darn it, I hate it when we get these "whatzit" questions with no information.

                            There you go.

                            Smith & Wesson came out with the L frame specifically for the .357 Magnum. The smaller K frame guns didn't like a steady diet of .357. Your 586 L Frame Smith will enjoy a regular feeding of 357 Magnum.
