dumb question on zero'ing night sights

Just so you know... you don't really "zero" fixed pistol sights...you align them. Only adjustable sights would get a zero which is defined as establishing a known point of aim/impact at a known distance.

Would it be safe to say that if a person adjust sights on a pistol to their liking or needs etc that if someone else picks that pistol up to shoot it that they'll have a harder time hitting their target because the sights are no longer in their original position?

Probably - if that 'someone' doesn't know how to shoot...

Having said that - what is an Original position? How would you know that the Original position has been sighted properly at the factory? (Which is why I like some manufacturers that add the target used to sight the new pistol. CZ does it with the Tactical Sports and so does Walther with the Q5 Match SF).


Again - a zero may be different between you and me - "with this gun and this ammo for this distance and with my skill level, this will be POI=POA at 15-yards."

If you are going to pick-up a new pistol (or borrow someone else's pistol) - shouldn't the the first few shots be to confirm "zero" - figure out the POI versus the POA...?

For a handgun - if I find that the POI is about 1-inch from POA at 10-yards even if I have good fundamentals, then I would obviously compensate in the next succeeding shots. OR adjust the sights accordingly (if possible).

Just like I do with a manual-driven car or a motorcycle - one of the first things I check is the friction point for the clutch.
