dumb question on zero'ing night sights

Center the sights as much you can eyeball.
Aim at the distance you'd like to zero. I zero my iron sights at 25-yards, my red dots at 10-yards.
Aim at the bullseye. Ensure sights are aligned with equal height/equal light. Fire a 3-shot group. If you're not confident in your fundamentals, use a rest, etc.
Measure distance of the center of the group (assuming you had a precise group) from the point-of-aim.
Adjust rear sight accordingly using sight radius and math. For rear sights - you push the sight in the direction that you'd like the hits to be. In my experience, it is one-pencil mark for every 1-inch at 25-yards.
Fire another 3-shot group to verify.

Don’t overthink it.- Center rear sight
- Shoot a test group
- If needed, drift the rear sight in the same direction you want to shift your POI (right to move POI right, left to move POI left)
- Repeat until POA matches POI

I would eyeball the install and fine tune at the range.
Windage: adjust same direction you want to go.
If your bullets are left of the target and you want bullets to go right, move rear sight right.
Elevation: also moves in the same direction.
If your bullets are landing bottom of the bullseye so you want bullets to go up, raise the rear sight.
I think the standard sight in distance is 25 yds, but I sight mine in at 10 yds because that's the distance I shoot the most at the indoor range. My indoor range only goes to ~15yds anyway.Last edited by Wordupmybrotha; 12-08-2020, 2:50 PM.Comment

A simple acronym, FORS, can help you remember that, when it comes to changing where your shot strikes, the Front sight should be moved in the Opposite direction and the Rear sight should be moved in the Same direction as your intended point of impact. Once again, to move your point of impact on the target, just remember FORS: Front sight Opposite, Rear sight Same.Comment

Above quote is wrong. Rear adj. for either windage or elevation is moved the same way you want the bullet to go. The poster may have been thinking of adj. elevation via the Front Sights.Comment

The top of the front sight post is HIGHER than the top of the dot on the front sight post. Take a look at your Trijicon - the dot sits lower than the height of the post.
In lowlight, you won't be able to see the black front sight post; only the dot.

Don't worry about the heights of the sights, they will work. I run them. Just line up three dots in a horizontal line, with the middle/front dot exactly inbetween the two rear dots. Adjust the rear as necessary to adjust, then leave them alone.

Cheapest and easiest is not to worry about it until it matters.
Shoot until you're keeping the shots in a group, then move the sights so they point to where the group is.
If you can't shoot well enough that the sight picture makes a difference in point of impact, there's no compelling reason to move them.
To adjust for errant shots, it's easier to look at it backwards: Sights are looking one place, shot is in another. Which direction do you move the sight in question (front or rear) to get them to look at where the shot landed (i.e. where do you move the sight so the line of bullet travel and line of sight are the same?)Last edited by divingin; 12-08-2020, 2:18 PM.Comment

Alex: you need to center the rear sight on the slide. You can use Dial Calipers to end up with the same dimension on both sides which means you are centered. Done.
The Front Sight should be the correct height. If it has dots the top of the sight must be even with the top of the rear sight.
In the case of My TFO's the dots are all the same size but the front appears smaller when viewed from behind the gun. The correct Sight Picture with that set up was to have the top edge of the Front Dot even with the Top Edges of the Rear Dots. That equated to the top of the Front Sight Blade being even with the top of the Rear Sight which is the correct sight picture.
You will go to the range or? and shoot at a 1" square at 5 yards. You will place the top of the Front Sight even with the bottom edge of the Square and centered up by comparing the sides of the Front Sight Blade to the sides of the square.
The bullet should hit directly in the center of the square which should give you perfect windage and elevation out to 25 yards. Shoot off a rest to eliminate as much of "YOU" as possible from the procedure. If the bullet doesn't hit in the center of the Square then take note of where it hit and shoot some more. If the group is centered on the square you are there.
This is how a Glock Pistol with stock sights is sighted in at the factory.
They actually know what they are doing.
On another note: Adjustable Sights are not needed on a Combat Pistol because once they are dialed in you are never going to change them. Same is true for fixed sights!
If you are not hitting the target chances are it is not the gun. It takes lots of practice to get good with a pistol. Nobody gets it overnight.

Nope. You are getting things mixed up. There is NO relation between the stock OEM sights (front + rear) with those from Trijicon (front + rear).
What I think @T3Pros was saying is that for any set of sights, the POA=POI can vary depending on whether you use the top of the post OR the top of the dot to align the shot, ie., you align the top of the front sight post with the top of the rear sight post OR align the top of the dot on the front sight with the top of the dot in the rear sight.
In a lowlight situation - it would be difficult to see the top (we call it the blade) of the post; so, we use what we can see (the Tritium dots). Why? Because the highest point of the dot is a tad lower than the top (blade) of the sight posts.
Since you are just starting out - I would suggest keeping it simple...
Once you get your Trijicons - forget everything about the stock OEM sights.
Then, install your Trijicons with the rear as mechanically centered as you can eyeball (or use caliper).
Select a distance, say 10-yards. Fire a good 3-shot group without changing where you are aiming. Remember to aim with equal height/equal light, ie., the top of the front sight is aligned to the top of the rear sight, and there is equal light left and right of the front sight as seen from the rear sight.
Find the center of that group. Measure the distance of that center to the point you are aiming. Say, "it is 2-inches high, 1-inch left of where I am aiming."
That above is YOUR ZERO for that pistol with that sight with your skill at that distance.
Now Trijicons won't allow you to adjust elevation, so, all you can do is adjust the rear. For the above zero, you can push the rear to the right to move the POI nearer to the aiming point.
Fire another group and verify/adjust if necessary.
In the end, your ACTUAL zero for your pistol with those sights and your skill would be "2-inches high at 10-yards."
To know the exact ZERO - you need to repeat the same exercise and find the distance where POA=POI. I would guess that for a set of sights to hit 2-inches high at 10-yards would have a zero very close to the shooter.
