Got another Ruger 45 today

A few years ago I picked up a Ruger SR1911.

Today I locked up this brick of a gun - meet my new to me Ruger P90DC.

The only thing I can see "wrong" with it is that the cop who owned it before put his DL# on it. But I'm okay with that. Adds to the story of where it's been.

Nice! I've been wanting to add one to my collection. The ruger p series are built like tanks. I'll probably never get rid of my P95 DC.

So "Simple Jack" became a cop? Putting your DL# on firearms is such a hillbilly thing to do.

I don't know about the "Hillbilly" thing or not. Could be a generational thing. At an early age my mom taught me her CDL# for a couple of reasons. If I were ever to get lost I could tell the cops her CDL# and they could find our address. She also marked everything we owned with it. Helped get my stolen bike back once. Mom would have been 78 in a couple of months.

A friend owned a P89 that was stolen and dumped somewhere on the grounds of the Presidio where it sat out in the elements for about 2 years. Was found and returned to him by SFPD (hard to believe, yes?) and it spent another 4 or 5 years in a humid heany garage up in Oregon. I found the thing in a drawer and took it all apart. A few spots of rust here and there, especially the sights and a few steel pins but other than that - clean and scrub, oiled it up and it went "bang" all day long. Not a bad testament.

A few years back I picked up a P89 in 9mm with a 30 Luger barrel. Don't use the 30 Luger all that much, but in 9mm it's very reliable and not all that awkward to handle.

The first gun I bought was a P89DC. It's one of the early models so it's hard to get magazines for it. I was bummed I couldn't pick up any more standard cap mags during freedom week.

Congrats! Ruger P Series are very rugged and reliable. I started off shooting a P85 as a kid, still have it today. If you like finger grooves, Hogue makes a nice rubber wrap-around grip.

Exactly why I bought this. I was in the industry back when the P85 came out. I always had liked them but never was able to pick one up. Was kind of keeping an eye out for a nice 85 or 89 but nothing popped up.

I saw this on ArmsList for $400 and jumped on it as soon as I saw it. I know that a lot of people here don't like ArmsList but to be honest I've bought and sold more guns on ArmsList than I have here on CalGuns.

Had one and it's a fantastic gun. Still have my 95dc. P series rugers are damn near indestructible.

The non DC was my first handgun. Still have it. Always wanted a DC version.

But a serial # does not tie the firearm (or any other object) as readily to the owner as does a personal identifier. It’s similar to inscribing you’re name on something. Sure, a serial # can sometimes be traced back to an owner, but not as quickly as his DL#.
And yes, it is a generational thing. Friends of my late father often engraved their names or license #’s on shop tools, for example.

Ditching the SN vs DL debate, and back to the firearm...nice pick up, OP. A close friend had one, and he really enjoyed it. I also took a liking to it when he brought it out to the range.

Awesome find! Wouldn’t pass up on a P series like that.
I’ve seen a lot of older guns with DL’s and SSN’s etched into them - I know a lot of them ended up that way after ‘68, but modern type guns are uncommon.

I am a fan of the P series especially the P90. It was designed by Bill Ruger himself, designed to be rugged, robust, and affordable.
