Uhm no, a soft case qualifies as locked just as much as a hard one. Don't rely on word of mouth, your instructor is wrong.
    Please, calm down.

      heres where he gets it

      E) The firearm is transported in a locked container as defined in subdivision (d) of Section 12026.2.
      # (d) As used in this section, "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. The term "locked container" does not include the utility or glove compartment of a motor vehicle.

secure is the key word. the sheriffs in my area have deemed anything that can be cut with a razor knife unsecure apparently because i was told I was not complying with the law
after all fish and game says a locked safe that is bolted to the vehicle is the same as a glove box and will site you for storing weapons in them
      they interpret the law
its you or my family!.... I choose family..too bad for you!

Yes, obviously the case has to be locked in order to be in compliance with the law otherwise whether or not the case is lockable would be a moot point. I was merely making the point that any lockable case that is locked is in compliance. I then gave the example of my fishing tackle box with a padlock being a suitable container.

          Essential information resource

I'm surprised that no one has recommended that he get the book, "HOW TO OWN A GUN AND STAY OUT OF JAIL - California 2006," by John Machtinger.

Every one of us should have it.

BTW, can anyone recommend other good gun law references for me?

I've been wondering about those brief few seconds I take my gun out of my locked trunk and into the range. They're in locked cases, but plastic ones that someone with motivation could pry apart. Am I going to have a problem with that?

Also...safes? Since when did we have to have safes? I thought in the home you could have it any way you please. No kids in my home, so no problem?

I was just forced by Turner's to buy a cable lock despite signing and affadavit and having a hard lockable case to transport the weapon.

They told me it was a fed law.

              Dunno if it's true...

true, but if i read the laws correctly, your pistol needs to be in a locked container to/from your car...

so in reality, you need a locked container for your pistol no matter what

Yes Luvtolean- It is new Federal law that all handguns must have a cable lock even if you have a safe. The safe affidavit is good for rifles and shotguns but a handgun must have a cable lock. However if you have a safe and sign the affidavit you can just bring in any cable lock to meet the federal law IIRC. They don't have the same requirement as DOJ that it must have been purchased in the last 30 days.

They said you have to have the receipt...but they could be confusing the laws dunno.

I will say in their defense, they only charged $6.00.
