    Need lock, case & safe...

Hello, while I wait for the 10-day waiting I need a new gun lock, case to travel and a gun safe to keep my Glock in. Living in CA, I want to make sure I comply with our laws.

So what do you recommend for DOJ CA approved:
    1. Gun lock
    2. Lock box/case to travel with
    3. Gun safe.

Again this is just for one handgun. Thanks.

Any gun cable lock will be fine, they're all the same.

In case you don't know, the trunk of your car qualifies as a locked case for transport.
    Please, calm down.

What kind of travel? Just to the range or cross country?

I used to use pistol rugs and toss them into a larger bag for the range, now my pistols usually travel in a starlight case whever they go.

If you buy an approved lock box or safe, keep the receipt, then you won't have to buy a gun lock.

WRONG. The cable lock that came with my G35, was not acceptable. It was a weak looking lock. I think it has to say CA DOJ approved somewhere; either on the lock itself or the box it came. Just give me a brand name please? Are you sure about the trunk?

What kind of gun lock do you want? There are locks that surround the trigger guard or cable locks that go through the action. Both disable the gun from being used.

When you pick up the gun you need to show both the lock and the receipt, showing purchase within the last 30 days, to the employee. It must be a DOJ approved lock. The cheapest DOJ approved lock can be found at walmart for about 5 bucks. It is a cable lock.

As for a lockable case, all that is necessary is a case that can be locked. For a while I was transporting my pistol to the range in an old plastic fishing tackle box with a padlock on it in my backpack on the back of my motorcycle. Your trunk will suffice if you drive a car with a trunk. If you want something nice, sturdy, padded, checkout the aluminum gun cases at turners, reeds, targetmasters, or just about any large sporting goods store.

I'm fairly certain that All cable locks that come with the firearm are DOJ certified as they also comply with federal mandates. It is NOT required to say DOJ approved anywhere on the lock or container. My Ruger cable locks do not say it and they were fine. Even my Safe doesn't say "meets DOJ approval".

you can search here to check if the lock model is on the list.http://safetydevice.doj.ca.gov/dsearch2.asp?select=make

The G35 .40 S&W cable lock is on the DOJ approved list

By the way all the cable locks look wimpy

YES your trunk suffices as a locked container for the purposes of transporting a handgun. You can't use the glove compartment or center console(even if they lock), but the trunk is perfectly OK

                Cable lock needs a receipt

The police station I live near (San Mateo) has a box of cable locks, take as many as you want, no one cares, they are provided by CDoJ. BUT they can't be used to pick up a firearm because there is no dated receipt. Conspiracy theorists are welcome to speculate, but I think it more likely just good ole incompetence.

Go to Big 5, buy the lock, get a reciept, after you pick up your gun return the lock. You dont have to have the lock on the gun when you pick it up. I never even open the locks, because all my guns end up in the safes.

If you have a safe why don't you just fill out the safe affidavit and forget the whole buying a lock and returning it business?

Well, at first I didn't want the DOJ to have the ability to come "inspect" my safe. But with the last few guns, I figured screw it! I'm all legit anyway. So, I just filled out the affidavit.

You have to have your pistol in a secured case. one that is locked not just can lock and the case has to be hard. no more soft locking bags according to my instructor.
unless you have a ccw then you must have your gun on your person

Your Glock will come with a case. I would bring a padlock. I just bought a XD and the dealer said I couldn't use a cable lock and wrap around the handle. So he gave me a brand new padlock. Who knows if he was right.

I'd like to see the law that specifies this. I use a combination of bags that can lock and 2 different cases that work well. Somedays when I only want to shoot one pistol, the softbag ends up locked in my shooting bag so-as I can carry it all in with one hand. Nobody has ever really been 100 percent sure on this and recommend the more secure hard cased setups or lock the oem box etc...

sort of like the confusion about locking up (non-AW) longuns even though "in the trunk" is good enough.
