Revolvers

That's a very good question and the answer is yes. The SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) handbook says that all shooters must be in costume for the entire event including social gatherings in the evening. Every shooter must also pick an alias. They consider these events to be historical reenactments.

That's OK; as long as you have good shooting technique, you're already ahead of the game. Shooting revolvers is very much like shooting those semi-autos.
I'm not in CA anymore, otherwise I'd take you shooting with a few. As for your first revolver, it doesn't have to be too expensive. I would recommend the .38 Special and .357 Magnum versions, for the reasons others have mentioned. You can shoot either "mild" or "wild" loads, and the ammo is not too expensive.
I'll focus on the double-actions since others have already talked about the Cowboy Action-type models (single-action). The double-actions can be used in IPSC/USPSA events. The wife and I have done this, and it's a lot of fun.
Right now, guns, generally, are commanding higher-than-normal prices due to concerns about safety, but normally--normally--a good double-action wheelgun, on the used market, is between $400 and $600. Good first models include, but are of course not limited to, the following.
Ruger:
--------
Security Six, Speed Six, GP100, SP101, and Redhawk 357 (all .357M)
Smith & Wesson:
-------------------
Models 10 and 64 (.38 Special)
Models 19, 65, 66, 586, 686, 27, and 627 (.357M)
Taurus:
--------
Models 65 and 66 (both .357M)
These are all very good, general-purpose revolvers that will serve you well. Note that all .357M revolvers will also happily shoot .38 Special, so you can practice with those lower-recoil rounds.
There are several other models that I didn't put on here, for three reasons.
1.) I have shot them and don't really care much for their quality.
2.) They're good, but very expensive (e. g. Colt *anything*).
3.) They are big-bore and thus ammo's pretty expensive, especially as a first revolver.
I know a lot of people turn up their noses at Taurus, and with the more powerful (e. g. 454 Casull) models, that may make sense. But the two models 65 and 66 are actually very well made.Last edited by Cowboy T; 09-06-2020, 6:51 PM."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"

Might as well drive a model t on the freeway. Unless it's a colt detective special, I failed to see the appeal of any revolver.sigpic

LOL. Your choice but you are missing out on 44 Magnum. It is an excellent round and makes 9/40/45 look weak and inadequate. 10mm is cute.
Shooting 357 Magnum out of an N Frame is just fantastic.Last edited by tomrkba; 09-06-2020, 10:29 PM.Biden's

Ah, but there's the Desert Eagle, which is the only gun good enough, since it's the only one in modern movies! Thus, revolvers are obsolete and should be melted down and reformed into Desert Eagles...you know, 'cuz Agent Smith....
</sarcasm>
True, and you have the added advantage of a .357M rifle, which as we know, becomes much more powerful out of that longer barrel than even a 6.5" N-frame. So, you have a dual-purpose round. Nothing wrong with the semi-autos, but the 9mm, 40, and 45 cannot do nearly as well out to 100 yards as, say, a .357M or .44M can. Nor can you download those cartridges in a semi-auto for initial marksmanship training.
Semi-autos are cool. So are revolvers. As long as it goes bang reliably, I like it."San Francisco Liberal With A Gun"
