I prefer the GI Guide because thats how its always been, and why fix something that doesn’t need to be. Plus its easier to take apart. Most notable 1911 shooters that I know of run GI guide rods. I’m sure there are benefits to full length but I don’t ever care to find out. I’m an old soul that believes the 1911 should mechanically be true to its original form. Otherwise, call it something else, like a 1912...jk. I saw a Brownells 4 minute video that explained some benefits of the full length guide rod. (So I don’t have personal experience with it) but they mentioned that it can be beneficial on weaker calibers or loads. In addition, its easier to switch slides running different calibers.

I do not change them. What ever comes in the 1911, when I buy it, is fine with me. No trouble with any type.
The two piece full length guide rods with the hex are pain. But, they work. Keep a hex wrench in the bag.

I like the invisible guide rod that was perfected by John Browning himself.

              I put one-piece full-length guide rods in all my 1911s. https://shopwilsoncombat.com/Full-Le...oductinfo/25G/

i like the additional weight of a full length guide rod.....plus my pistol, which was very meticulously fitted, always felt just a hair smoother when manipulating the slide when fitted with a full length guide rod.

I know some guys that swap out to full length guide rods before they even shoot their new gun. I have both versions in various shooters...to each his own.

Has there been a ' Poll ' on this with the Cal-Gun consortium yet ?

This right here is good enough for me.

I'll be switching my 9mm Target 1911 to a 1-pc guide rod because I don't want to have to dig out a 5/32 allen wrench to take the thing down.

If you shoot then the full length guide rod will prob come loose at some point so keep that Allen wrench close by to tighten it back up. I run a full length guide rod only because it looks cooler when the slide is locked back. And if you know anything about guns then you know looking cool is the most important part

I have several 1911s, but I only use a rod on only one. The 10mm. Adds just a little extra weight out front to aid with the added recoil.

i guess i should clarify...the full length guide rod i prefer has a little hole drilled through it that one inserts a paper clip in to remove the spring and guide as a single unit.....(not the hex key / 2 piece type of guide rod).

They're somewhat common on competition 1911 pistols, especially compensated ones.

                              here's one example: https://www.brownells.com/handgun-pa...prod41670.aspx
