    9mm 147gr vs 115gr Question

I was checking out Underwood Ammo and I noticed these two types of ammo.

How come the 115gr is more suitable for Dangerous and Large games, while the 147gr is only good for Medium games? I thought the heavier bullet would be more suitable for larger games.

Heavier bullet has lower velocity and less energy? Plus, the 115gr. looks like some sort of hollow point or specific type of piercing design.

I personally wouldn't want to use any 9mm rounds for any "dangerous, large game".

Those are completely different rounds. Solid copper 115gr vs lead FMJ.

The Extreme Penetrator is a much different projectile than a standard FMJ projectile.

Stupid advertising gimmick. No 9mm Wikipedia be used elk. I would use it for dangerous game, criminals.

The 147gr load is probably better for large game because it has more momentum than the 115gr load which means it should penetrate deeper.

9mm for large game claims send up a red flag for me.

I've asked this question before but not turned up much real world experience. The Penetrator bullets perform great in ballistics gel. They do what heir name says, not doubt about that. But how do they do in meat? Has anyone actually shot an animal with these? Or a pork shoulder behind a stack of baby back ribs? (Terrible waste of barbecue, which is why I've never done it, but you know, inquiring minds want to know.)

Where did you get the idea and/or who told you that any of those are for shooting any size game?? Game meaning hunting animals.

147 gr is heavier and slower than 115 gr which is lighter and faster. Neither is good for hunting game unless if you are planning to shoot jack rabbits in the back yard.

And, if you have done any hunting at all, you should know that where you hit the game is what counts.

The 9mm round was made for two legged game and the average off the shelf 9mm (Nato) is more than adequate for that if you hit them where it counts. Do not waste your money on fancy marketing ads.

When I use to backpack in Alaska I carried a Ruger SRH in .44magnum and I thought that was barely sufficient, I couldn’t imagine using 9mm on dangerous and large game, no matter how hotly loaded or the bullet type, but whatever anyone is comfortable with guess anything is doable. Just my opinion, I wouldn’t trust marketing that suggested 9mm for dangerous and large game, but that’s just my opinion. Definitely get the ammo if you need practice ammo and possibly defense ammo, but for defense such as HD I would suggest hollow points for 9mm.

I couldn't find the article, but I do recall reading the account of a guy in AK that killed a brown bear with a 9mm loaded with Xtreme Penetrators. I "think" that is where Underwood is getting the balls to rate that ammo for dangerous game.

But, I'm with the guy in the video. I wouldn't count on it killing a bear. It might do it, hell, Eskimos have killed Polar bears with a .17 Rem., but I surely wouldn't call a .17 Rem a dangerous game cartridge.
