Does she live in CA too? From what I know, I believe there’s a form you need to fill out and mail to DOJ. No FFL required.

Someone will chime in with the actual link.

        No earlier paperwork doesn't matter.

Mom and you CA residents she hands you gun you fill out this form and mail in with $19 https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/a...orms/oplaw.pdf

If she is out of state she sends to FFL along with note she is your mom and gifting it to you. Roster doesn't matter in this case. You go to FFL pay his receiving fee, DROS and wait 10 days.

She wants to gift the gun to me but not sure how to do it. I don’t have any experience with private party sales or transfers so wasn’t sure of the process. Do we need to visit an ffl to transfer it to me?
Read this, fillout and submit this, thank Mom for the gift.

You will need a Firearms Safety Certificate (testing available at most FFLs...$25). Reference Guide, here.

When submitting the form, use a personal check, which will show they’ve received the form. (It will take months for them to send you an acknowledgement.)

You can also do it electronically on CFARS. Info here.

Does this process also apply to long guns and shotguns I inherit?

Verify they are CA "legal" before the transfer.

Also note that Cal DoJ has been asking people for photos of registered guns, even though the law does not require photos for most types of gun registrations. You can search for the many threads on that topic.

This is intrafamilial transfer and yes must be ca compliant. Get your fsc. This is not going thru ffl.

Was there ever a time when an inter familial transfer didn’t have to be recorded? What year did that start? I.e. if OP has a gun manufactured in 1989 and the law was effective 1988, he couldn’t have been gifted without paperwork legally.

Pretty big assumption that it is not registered, because the OP's mother can not locate any paperwork. The revolvers I bought in the 80s all show up in AFS.
