Micro comp on threaded barrel, CA legal

    Hi everyone.

Recently moved to CA and adjusting to the laws here. I own a VP9 Tac which comes with threaded barrel. The barrel was removed from the handgun and it was replaced with a non-threaded barrel when I learned of the AW setup in this combination. BTW, I was traumatized by this find! lol.

HKparts has a micro comp (see image) for the VP9 that requires tools to set in place. The install requires locking down set screws and they also suggest red locktite to finish the job. I know that cleaning will be a pain, but would this be considered a fixed configuration under CA law? Prefer not to pin as cleaning is an important part of the decision. Just starting the discussion to get a feel if this could be legal or that I just live with the emotional guilt of my threaded barrel never having a home here in CA.

Thanks in advance for your insight or PoV.

I'm no legal expert, but I don't think that comp is legal in California. All it requires is for you to heat and remove the set screws and then you can remove the comp. That isn't permanently attached, which is the legal requirement.

If you welded the set screws in place, that might meet the legal requirement.

Not legal must be welded. Or risk a felony and use your threaded barrel.

Allow me to interject here... (Sorry to steal the thread, but I was wondering something similar to the OP...)

So, is a threaded barrel not legal in CA on handguns, at all? Even if it's just a threaded barrel with a simple thread protector?

You can not have a threaded barrel attached to a handgun, in Ca. Doing so create's a Ca defined "assault weapon". Anything threaded on must be permanently attached, as previously mentioned.

I wonder what Smith and Wesson and others use to attach a thread protector to guns like The Walther P22's with threaded barrels purchased legally before the regs when they were sent in to be "fixed" ? I don't think they welded them. Epoxy?

I believe it was red Loctite. They did this on the M&P 22's as well.
                Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Close. You can't have a threaded barrel on a handgun with a detachable magazine.

A handgun with a fixed 10 round or less magazine may have a threaded barrel installed.

A handgun which is a revolver may have a threaded barrel installed.

Loctite and setscrews does not constitute permanent.
You need a pin going through the muzzle device and slightly into the barrel and then the pin needs to be welded in place.
I can do a proper permanent attach job for you.

A threaded barrel on a semi-automatic handgun makes it an assault weapon if the magazine is not fixed in the frame.
