I wanted to add to this very helpful thread, sometimes you get great information from these older post. But for some reason we can't add to threads of a certain age, can this be fixed? Should it be ?
The story is, I have lusted after these Cougers and Smolts ever since I first googled the term two years ago. I lucked into a Smith & Wesson Model 28 an acquaintance I haven't talked to in years was selling. A mismatched M28, and it turned out to be a perfect candidate. I then went looking for a Python barrel. Everything on the auction sites was overpriced and I couldn't find the 6" blue barrel I wanted.
Lesson 1, refinish work.
I learned from a different thread George Roghaar was someone who could match the finishes on the parts.
I then lucked into the Python barrel, a NOS 8" Target barrel. It was cheap, like aftermarket Glock barrel cheap. This made the project doable and affordable. I sent everything out to Florida for George to work on, he was very helpful and excited about the project. We discussed the barrel installation and sent the gun to Texas after the finish work. As it turns out that gunsmith wasn't able to install the barrel. Untouched I got the barrel and Model 28 back. George had matched very closely the Colt Royal Blue to the Smith Unpolished frame.

Lesson 2, talk to your gunsmith.
I've had a previous gun made at Craig Maraviov's. He made a Para into a 10mm from a box of parts I gave him. But for some reason I didn't think about it when it came time for revolver work. Then I stumbled on the above thread.
Of course, the two best known guys for doing this are here in Sacramento and just 30 min down the road. Tuesday I got to pick it up, and It's a beast. I'm very happy with the 8" now that I see it assembled.
I don't think these guys google much, It looks like George did his own website. But these like many others are disappearing craftsmen. I guess I'm saying, this is a bump for them.
