The Smith 1917 had a very nice blued finished, much better than the Colt's "wire brush" finish which showed distinct swirls and coarse polish marks in consistent patterns through out manufacture. Especially around the front sight and right side behind the recoil plate. Parkerizing later obliterated those markings.

So this reminded me of mine. S&W 1918 vintage (102 yrs old!)

            Martial markings

I shoot it every year on my birthday.

I picked up a Colt 1917 cheap because it had a bulged barrel. It actually shot fine, but I picked up a .45 Colt New Service 5 inch barrel and had it put on as the bulge bothered me. The barrel marking is incorrect so I would never sell it to prevent someone from trying to shoot .45 Colt in a .45 ACP cylinder.

If Colt was smart they would re-issue this revolver in it's exact form as a classic.

A solid service revolver chambered in .45acp is a serious problem solver in the confines of a WW1 trench.

It worked equally as well in Viet Nam.
