    Colt Woodsman

I recently picked up a late 1960's made Colt Woodsman but as they were made past "C&R" status date figured I'd post here. The gun came with no magazine. Triple K () magazines go anywhere from $36.00 to $50.00 a pop. Paying on the low end wouldn't be so bad, but Triple K quality is lousy - I think they exist to make ProMag look good. So looking around for a deal I found that Beretta NEOS magazines fit perfect with a slight modification to the plastic floorplate or replacing with a Woodsman metal type.

Attached is a link to the Colt Forum - link to Numrich for the floorplates.

I'm assuming some 3rd series Woodsman owners have seen the You Tube video or are aware of the "almost" interchangeability of Beretta NEOS and Woodsman magazines. I gave it a try and modifying the plastic NEOS floorplate is all that I needed to do to make the mag work perfectly. Shave down the...

If one prefers to just modify the Beretta floorplate all that's needed is dressing it down so the mag catch will close, and building up the front so the mag doesn't seat too deep.

The NEOS magazines are head and shoulders above Triple K and total cost (with new floorplate) runs about $28.00. Modifying the Beretta floorplate means the only cost is the mag, which is generally about $19.00.

I have a 2nd series Colt Woodsman. About 15 years ago, I tried to find magazines for it, and they were difficult to find. I then search ebay and was paying $80-$90 for an original Colt magazine. I ended up buying 6 magazines. Now the prices for those same magazines are around $150. Colt is not making anymore magazines and they are going to continue to go up in price.

Just spend the money on a couple originals

That's like putting autozone hubcaps on a 63 vette

You have a classic treat it as such

I bought a Huntsman a few yrs ago. It had a Beretta magazine and didn't work real well.
        I ended up buying these

They did need a little tweaking of the feed lips, but otherwise, they work fine.

OP all Colt Woodsman pistols are C&R - the date of manufacture does not matter because they are specifically listed in the ATF publication.

I was going to say that.

And, it's not just the Woodsman. The Huntsman and Targetman made all the way up to 1975 are C&R.

            Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

According to the 2018 publication up to 1978. That does not make sense because I think 1974 was the last year of manufacture. 1975. Makes sense in that it could account for shipping delays. But all Woodsman pistols and all sub-species are C&R.

Thanks all. I didn't pay much attention to that, even though the serial number puts mine at 1965, because the store I bought from did the "we don't do C&R" routine. I guess that means I can check out GB for a Huntsman, etc to send in to CA. O r snag one on out of state trips.

i have a match target and bought some Trip K mags for it a long time ago. After some fitting/polishing I got them to function. The finish was ROUGH.

I found this site very useful for all things woodsman. Detail how-to strip/clean was my initial search and i struck info gold.
