Bought the pistol used. Lock up was tight with little to no end play. When shooting normal loads ejection was fine. Full house loads cases needed to be beat out. Sent it back to smith and they said the cylinder was out of spec and needed to be replaced. Opted to upgrade to a plus, non fluted. Cost was 212.00 plus about 6 months turn around.
With the new spring kit it is amazingly smooth.

Ah ok so you meant fluted. I get it. I've got a 686 CS-1 with a 4" barrel and I pull it out of the safe to fondle it at least once a week.

I am looking at 686-3 4”. The friend of a friend is asking $760. The gun looks in good shape. Fair price or too high?

Don't really know much about revolvers, but why is the pre-lock no dash 686 more desirable than a newer similar model?

Were they just made better back then?

            I bought a 586-1 for $450 a couple of years ago.
I agree, add $150-$200 to highpower's estimates, if you want to get a nice example... you always get what you pay for.

Pre-lock and pre-MIM is what matters to most people on the 686.

Looks like the one I have in the safe is a Pre-Lock, No Dash 686 with 4" barrel. Have had it since 2000 (bought from a friend back then), but don't really shoot revolvers.

Here is a photo that just says "Mod. 686" It doesn't seem to have a dash then another number?

Yup, pre lock, no dash. Also "No M" The no dash models had a recall to replace the hammer nose and bushing, when that was done they stamped an "M." by the model. I also have a "no dash, no M" 686 4". My favorite revolver.

I snagged a decent condition 686-4 4" model about 1 1/2 year ago for $650. It had a couple small scratches but the lock-up was nice and tight. I could tell it sat in someone's drawer for years and was only fired a few times.

Good deals are out there, you just have to find them and when you do pounce on them without hessitation.

I'd be looking for and praying for a bunch of patience...they're not particularly rare, but they're generally keepers that hold their value well. Search the web as often as you can, and find a dealer who won't rape you over a transfer fee.

No disagreements here on @sigstroker's comment on the 86 v. the 686...I also agree with NO lock, and pinned and recessed to a slightly lesser degree.

                        G'luck and post pics.

So, I don't really shoot mine (pre-lock, no dash) 4" 686. In great shape, locks up perfect, shoot great, but has black Pachmayr grips.

What would be a fair price for a local FTF sale in Orange County?

I would ask $700 and take a little less.
