S&W 686 Pre-Lock No Dash

Hey Cal Guns,
I am looking into the market of the pre-lock 686's, and wanted to ask what would be a fair price to pay for a 4" or 6". Any thing in particular that I should be looking for or checking before commiting to buying one. Any help is highly appreciated.

Good luck on finding a good condition 686 no dash for a fair price in California. I’ve been looking for one also as I have a 586 no dash to pair it with.

Paid 700.00 for my 686-3. 6 inch barrel.
But it came with 500 rounds of ammo plus 500 once fired cases. Sad to say it had a bad cylinder and had to be fitted with a new non recessed cylinder.

I think highpower is pretty close. I might bump them up just a bit but not much.

They do come up from time to time at very fair prices. In the last few months I picked up a 686-4 2 inch and a 686 plus 2 inch for under $1000 combined

I snag them whenever I see them at good prices - one of my favorite revolvers

My advice to you; if this is on your list of "gotta haves", and one comes up in the right condition, don't have walk away over a few bucks. I've found that a few extra bucks just doesn't mean all that much in hindsight, versus getting what you want now and enjoying it. This is in relation to pieces that aren't currently manufactured in the desired configuration.

In the few posts thus far, and I'm sure there are more to come, you can see someone else will buy it if you don't.

If you find a pristine 686 no dash with 6 inch barrel, let me know. I'll buy it for $850.

If you find a pinned and recessed Model 66 with 4 inch barrel, let me know. I'll buy it for $1150.

Let me just sell my Glock Gen 5 for $2000 first.

I bought a 586-1 for $450 a couple of years ago.

If I were getting an older one like this, I would much rather have a 586 than a 686. The stainless steel Smith used back then made for gritty operation and sometime galling of moving parts in the 686.

The downside is that finding a nice 586 is much harder because the 686 surface can take a lot more abuse. OTOH if you do find a nice looking 586 it's likely it has been well-treated throughout it's life.

Maybe in Commiefornia, but I have seen several like new 686's for sale on the local Armslist for $600-$700 over the last few years. Any more than that and they linger unsold for weeks or even months. There is a brand new one for sale at a local dealer for $739....

About 3 years ago, I bought a minty 4" 686-3 for $850. Sold it a year later for the same. Orange County for both transactions.

I didn't know you could get a 686 with a recessed cylinder?

Edit: Is there any chance the cylinder issue is because it wasn't the stock cylinder?
