    S&W Model 657-3

    Hi all,

I am (literally) asking for a friend, but he has the opportunity to purchase a S&W Model 657-3, but it's from out of state.

Is it legal to have this gun come from another state and own in California?

Unless it is over 50 years old or from a parent or child then no it wouldn't be legal to ship into the state. Unless of course he is exempt. Just because it is used doesn't mean the roster doesn't apply.

Yes it is legal to have it shipped here.

Question is, can he legally take possession of it?

It's not on the roster so it would need to be made roster exempt.

Need more information to let you know if that can be done.

      Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

he doesn't have the exact date of it, but he's thinking it is from the 1980's.

I forgot about the Single Action Exemption. You'd have to find a FFL to convert it.

FYI...Model 657-3 production began in 1994. Ended in 1996. A quick call to SW Customer Service 1 800 331 0852 would confirm exact year if you have the SN.

Why? Do it yourself...it's a 10-minute process and doesn't take a rocket science degree.

My FFL allows me to do it as his office desk before he starts the DROS on it.

The date of manufacturer isn't what we need to know.

                How long is the barrel?

So long as the barrel is 3" or longer you can do the "single action" exemption already referenced. Be certain you have an FFL who is OK with it. Some require the gun to show up SA, others will do it themselves and others will let you do it. The "easy to follow" instructions have already been posted - takes 5 minutes with simple hand tools.
