Like truck selections. Preference for 9mm, .40 or .45 is a user or application choice. With magazine restrictions to 10 rounds. Some prefer larger calibers.

I prefer 9mm for factory and 45acp for reloading. 40 s&w is a dead caliber to me.

I think both questions depend entirely on you and your capabilities/limitations. Also, is it going to be used for carry, range use, home defense? I've met more than a few shooters who could handle just about any 9mm but couldn't hit the side of a barn with a 40 when fired from similar size and weight pistols. My SiL is a perfect example. He was talked into a Shield 40 as his first handgun and could never shoot it well. I really liked it and shot it well, but not as well as my Shield 9 or 45. I even loaded up some lighter, slower rounds to work up his skills to handle a full power 40, but he just never got there. He eventually bought a 9mm conversion barrel for it and now shoots it very well.

So, best answer would be for you to hit the range and rent several different pistols in both calibers to see which you shoot best. I'd also suggest you add the 45ACP to you list of choices.

Use the biggest caliber handgun you can effectively shoot. I prefer the 45ACP, but for my purpose the guns I own in this caliber are rather big or heavy. The handguns I have on standby are Glock 23, Glock 27 and S&W BG380. When there’s that unexpected knock on the door the BG380 is in my back pocket 1 in the chamber and a full mag. If my dog go crazy barking like someone is near the house especially at night, the G23 is on me with a loaded 12 gauge pump in my hands. I’m not knocking anyone’s choice, in my case the BG380 gets the most use because of its’ size. I can easily hand over the BG380 to my wife as she’s not intimidated by the mild blast and recoil.

Maybe you should have asked the question before you bought the 9. Unless you're into losing money, based on other's opinion.

If you like the Glock 19 and can shoot it well, you did fine. The Glock 19 is a very popular pistol that should serve you well.

While I'm not a Glock owner, hundreds of thousands of Glocks have been sold, and many of those were the 19. Basic logic says that nobody is going to sell that many of anything if there isn't some substance motivating the popularity, like good manufacturing quality, value for the money, and reliability. That holds true for guns, cameras, televisions, vehicles, and pretty much any commodity.
