The conversion/upgrade requires changing the 1911 frame to a 2011 frame. I have heard of a manufacturer destroying one AR lower to put that serial number onto another AR lower for warranty replacement before, but that was for the same AR lower. I have also personally dealt with Mega Arms where I had to send back a defective AR lower (after registering it to me), but because they could not do that same operation noted above, they had to destroy my lower, and send me back a different lower with a different serial number for me to DROS again. You simply cannot send a 1911 back to NHC, have them switch out to a completely different frame but put your original serial number on it (a frame they already noted on their site that they would not sell to California residents no less), and send it back to you...

Basically the only ways now:
Doing it by transferring as a break top, single shot pistol to begin with, then changing parts, or "manufacturing" (State's language, not mine) an "unsafe", semi-auto pistol is tempting fate IMO... However you decide to skin the cat, the end result is you skinned the cat... Now, how the person shooting next to you at the range is going to know how that new pistol began its life is by luck of the draw, but anything that doesn't look like it was once on the roster is going to get a lot of attention. That person next to you may just be a boy scout LEO who knows his laws and looking to make a test case out of you, then the burden of prove is on you...
If any FFL is able to do this by getting past the letter of the law, I'm all ears and will be waiting in line to get a frame.Comment

Just curious, why not change the SVI? At least when I was thinking about one before I managed to PPT a frame oh so long ago, I heard you could buy the stock SVI and send it back to them and have whatever you want done to it after you DROSed it.Back in norcalComment

No problem sending it back to SVI if you got a SVI, I was referring to people getting a SVI and then trying to do changes on their own. Of course as soon as I say that, there'll be a ton of people coming on to say they've been "gunsmithing" since puberty and why not do the work themselves and save time and money?! I'm working on a pretty cool prototype right now have a handgun that fires 45 Long Colt out of a breech single shot! Looks like it'll be really fun at the range. Parts are coming in over the next two weeks I hope to have a little video of it running indoors so you guys can see how a custom single-shot might work. The fun part? I'm making them in really interesting calibers like 9 mm 45 45 Long Colt even 308! All based on a 1911 frame!
