Just a suggestion instead of a pump upper.

Youtube assures me all the cool operators hold their AR's by the front of the lower receiver. (You know, minus videos of legitimate 3-gun competitors ). Support hand on the receiver puts your thumb right on top of the BSD.

To give you some ideas for a home brew pistol upper. I think pump-action AR pistol uppers would be quite popular here.

Every once in a great while, somebody comes up with a simple idea and then does the hard work to build an elegantly simple design. The Bentwood

I've been watching this when I was planning this project. Looks neat and sleek. I like the grip has eccentric barrel hole so that it provide more surface to hold. The way it uses top rail as a guide to avoid pump spinning is cool. Well thought design. Thanks for the info!

no-go, we went through that a long time ago. You hold down a tier5 and it's semi auto. BSD has a disconnector, so there's no way to defeat it.

Is holding down a button not performing a manual action though? I thought the last AW ban text stated a semi automatic firearm was one that could fire continuously with each pull of the trigger without any manual action.

Just because I've been wondering about certain things on the same train of thought as the OP

What about a lever action AK/AR?

I wish. Then you could modify the grip safety on any pistol to function the same way (that has a grip safety) and have a not-semi-auto pistol.

The argument has been tried before (in the court of Calguns)

Thanks for your interest. Should be able to update with photos soon.
For ak, I've been waiting for saiga's pump 556 but haven't heard any updates for us sales. Pump ak designed for Russian ipsc team in manual rifle division.

Lever would be another viral option. Just need more parts and space compare to pump I guess.

AK seems to be friendly to pump action.

I've used a pump action AR and let me tell you, it's not a viable solution. It's slightly better than (true) single shot and that's about it. Because of the way an AR bolt rotates as it locks you can't run it the same way you would a pump shotgun, it takes way more force and it's clunky enough to upset your point of aim.

SocottyXbones, I guess you're right. Releasing the lock up by barrel axis motion only would be more work as it involves perpendicular force vector to rotate the locked up bolt. The "slightly better" part is what I'm getting I think and will have to figure it out how I feel. Thanks for the feedback.
