    Glock 17 VS Beretta 92FS

Looking to get a new handgun and was settled on the Glock 17, but saw that the Beretta 92FS can be had for 50$ more at Turners.

Would you get it over the Glock? Any pros and cons of the two?

    Thanks for input!

Two totally different weapon systems. Each one of the very best of its "type"; striker fired and DA/SA full size service combat pistol. What are you looking to buy one or the other for? CCW, competition, tactical training, collect / check off a box? We all will kinda need to know what you want to do with the gun to be able to recommend one over the other.

I'd get the Beretta for the utterly debatable reason that I like the way the Beretta looks and don't like the way the Glock looks.

I have a 92F from the 90's and I love it. I picked it up because it was my service pistol, and I wanted to get something with no learning curve. I've shot a perfect score with it on the Army qual test. For me, the ergonomics are amazing.

As a service pistol I think the aluminum frame is a big drawback. Aluminum doesn't wear like steel and gets fatigued even when not abused. But there's no way you'll ever shoot it enough to get there. My unit had one's that were completely shot out. The .45s still shot well even though they were a decade at least older.

        And finally, Martin Riggs.

Full disclosure: I have never owned or even shot a Glock. That will be changing soon.

For $50, go with for the Beretta.

          They are both good.

Wait for the Glock to go on sale, and buy it too.

Mainly home defence and target practice.

This is genius. The safe setting is redundant with the long DA trigger pull. And I hate handgun safeties anyway.

I gotta spend more time on this board to stay up to date.

I've owned a Beretta for over 30 years, and it's still one of my favorite guns. I also own Glocks and do like them.

Boils down to what are you going to use it for. If you want to gun to compete in shooting events you'll probably want the Glock as it's easily customizable, and the single action/striker is easier to get that first shot off in competition. On a DA/SA getting that first DA shot off quickly takes a lot of practice, then you're immediately following it up with a different single action pull which again takes a lot of practice to get right.

If I could only own one I'd definitely take the Beretta any day. I'm also more old school because I like decockers and DA/SA. I've been shooting them longer than a lot of Glock fans have been alive. You can also get a used Glock in the future - you'll save a bunch of money (I paid less than $400 out the door (ppt - no tax) for each of my Glocks and they were barely shot).

You can go G17, no trigger mod, Night Sight, Laser / Light combo for both HD and Target shooting until you can shoot 4" / 25 yards. Clay pigeon at 25 yards.

I don't like to cut corners in home defense. So Glock 17 would be my choice. I shot the M9 in service and there's a lot to like about it. Accurate, comfortable, nice trigger. However, reliability is average at best. My Glocks have been incredibly reliable. Nothing else I've used even comes close, my G23 has never malfunctioned in any way. I love the grab and go simplicity, no external safety, it just works for me.

That said I'll be adding a 92fs/M9 to the stable eventually as it's a fun, iconic service pistol.

2nd problem is that serious 92 series Beretta shooters convert the safety/decock levers to the G configuration, which is decock only.

3rd problem is the fixed front sight. Again, serious 92 series shooters choose the Wilson Brigadier or Langdon Tactical LTT 92 Elite with the dovetail front sight.

Glock 17 requires a set of sights, which can be had for $60.

I'm Not sure I understand why you are supposed to decock whike shooting.. Never heard of this. Please indulge me!

                            FWIW:

Its hard to upgrade the sights on the Beretta. Glock is easy to install nightsights.

The Beretta grip is bulky to some shooters so not necessarily an advantage over the Glock which also upsets finicky shooters with baby hands.

The Beretta trigger is easy to improve right away by installing a lighter hammer spring like a Wilson's, very cheap upgrade too.

No accessory rail on the Beretta, if that matters.

                            Both are utterly reliable.

My advice: if the price on the Beretta is $500-$550, go ahead and get it with the intention of getting a Glock 19 later. I personally would get an INOX 92fs over a standard 92fs. The INOX can be found for about $100 more. If you want something that will shoot better than a Beretta or Glock and cheaper than a Beretta, get a CZ SP01 or P01.

                              I have a Beretta 92FS INOX. It is my full size 9mm. My other 9mm pistols are a Glock 19, 26 & 43.
I chose the Beretta over the Glock because i just really like the way it looks. And it shoots well too.
And if you can find one will accept a 96 upper.
