    Competition Guns

I'm thinking about joining some shooting competition. I was wondering if you guys can list a few gun models that are the standard . I was looking into a Glock 35 with no upgrades stock. Reason for this is I think skill superseeds gimmicks. Price range is $500-$2400, pretty muchbopen ended since it'll be my main competition pistol. I prefer bone stock but do not mind the upgrades, any tips and advice. I'm from the bay area. I will go out and feel them out also so I understand grip, comfortable posture, and trigger anticipation is some of the key fundamentals I should be looking for. Basically what guns do you recommend for completions ?

Glock 34, M&P Pro are the most common pistols from what I've seen, assuming you're talking USPSA, IDPA and 3 Gun.

Which competition? USPSA, IDPA? there's a uspsa match every month at the 200 yard metcalf range.

Pretty open to all of them, I will take a look at the M&P compared to the Glock, any more options, post , kinda rookie of the year here on competition shooting also. So if there are other counties, I am willing to drive within two hours of the bay area, thanks everybody!

Richmond Rod & Gun has a lot of Action Pistol competitions

A little further away is the largest IDPA club in the state in Ione (Sacramento)

There are also two USPSA clubs that shoot at Ione

            Looking East, there is Linden

Stock Glock 17, USA commercial grade FMJ ammo such as Winchester White Box.

If and when you can shoot up to the gun & ammo capabilities then throw money at competition guns.

Bone stock G17 with a thousand or two rounds thru it will sell on the used market for `~ 75% of purchase price if you find out you can do better with a comp gun.

So it costs you maybe $150 hit on the gun, while others here will no doubt tell you throw away $200 on rentals. Don't alter the gun.

Glock 35 can compete in Limited or Limited 10 in USPSA in major power factor. Shooting 40 in production can be done but 9mm is the preferred caliber for the lighter recoil and faster recovery. Production division requires minor power factor. Visit your local USPSA or IDPA club and see which one you’d like to compete in.

With a G35, you can play in SSP and ESP in IDPA.

You can load a .40 down pretty far to compete with 9mm guns

You really need to narrow down what competition means. What are you looking to shoot? USPSA or IDPA? What category? If I were going to shoot USPSA Production I'd go with a CZ SP-01.... Nothing wrong with Glock, but most plastic gun shooters end up with metal guns for the game. CO is the one place that doesn't hold true.

You will also get better help over at the Brian Enos forums. They are geared toward competitive shooting.

As others of have said, a lot is determined by the type of competition and gun division in which you want to shoot.

That being said, the Glock 34/35 models are the hands-down best choices in terms of on-roster guns for the widest variety of sport choices. A decent 1911 or a CZ SP-01 is probably next on offering you choices while being on the roster.

If you have access to off-roster guns, then your decisions get harder. S&W M&P Pro, Walther 5" PPQ, Springfield XDm 5.25" are all possible choices.

A used Glock 34/35 if not abused will go for $450-500 so you aren't going to lose much if anything by getting into the sports with one of those.

If you are new to pistol shooting you need to get instructed on the Fundamentals of Gun Handling, Loading, Unloading, Proper Grip, Sight Picture Trigger Control, Malfunction Clearance, Drawing from a Holster etc. before you show up at a Competition.

It is Common Courtesy to the other shooters that you know which end of the gun the bullets come out of, and that you can operate your gun competently.

I highly recommend that you attend a 4 Day Defensive Pistol Class or several given by Professionals at a school like Front Sight, Gunsite, Thunder Ranch or some place comparable.

Then after you can shoot the gun with some degree of competence get Gryff from the post above to acclimate you to Shooting in Competitions.

You'll get better faster using this approach than if you just try to wing it.

If you opt to ppt an off roster firearm, I’d go for:

                          *SIG P320 X5
                          *SA XD(M) 5.25
                          *STI 2011 Edge

                          Or

                          Glock 34/35

A Glock 34/35 is more suited to competing in NRA Stlye Action Pistol no doubt.

I recommended a stock G17 because in the case of wanting to sell the pistol in 6 months & year there are more people looking for a stock G17 then they are a competition pistol; The demand for stock G17 is higher. G17 or G34/35, Win-Win.

there's a USPSA match tomorrow(Sept-2) at Richmond Rod and Gun.
                              9am-3pm or so.

if you want to see what everyone is running.
average turn out is about 120-150,
with a good mix of all divisions(Production, Single Stack, Limited, Open, PCC).
Lot's of pretty good shooters as well.
