Well with the smaller gun, you can always use the padded magazines to recover a full length grip, but you can't shorten the taller gripped gun. So if you decide to never CCW, then you can use the magazines with the extensions. But if you have the bigger gun, then you might have wished for she shorter gripped gun.

The barrel length is mostly irrelevant.

For me if it was my one and only gun ... probably the subcompact UNLESS the possibility of CCW was completely out of the question. Actually, if it was me, I'd get a Glock 19, but you don't like Glocks.

Sacramento shop has the XD9 for $360. You can get mags around $25 online.

where does your pinky ride with the flush mag and is it uncomfortable???

My pinky does ride at the bottom of the mag and it is a little bit awkward not have a full comfy grip, but I am still able to shoot that little pistol extremely accurately. The pinky extension grip helps provide a full grip, but it's more about my grip and shooting fundamentals that contribute to shooting it accurately, because I'm able to adjust my grip to different pistols. To answer your question, it is a little uncomfortable, but not painful nor enough to affect my shooting. Long shot, but if you're in the South San Francisco area, you can shoot my sub-compact XD to see if you like it.

imo if you aint gonna carry it, dont get a compact. If its going on your CCW thats one thing, otherwise I recommend getting a 4" so you can shoot it.

There is no point to a compact gun if you aren't carrying it. For range use and home defense, a 4" is great.

I've shot XDs for years, but usually the 5" models. I've put a number of rounds through both the 3" and 4" models, though.

I have both a full-size XDM 40 and a subcompact 3-in XD40 for EDC. For CCW go for the smaller, for anything else go big. That being said, I can shoot the center out of a paper target at 15 feet with the subcompact no problem. Plenty accurate for how I use it.

Get the 4” selection. I like the bigger option. The pinky off the bottom of the grip is a turn off. YMMV.

I have the XD9 Subcompact with 10 round mags. My pinky rides under the grip. It is a CCW gun for me, but I shoot it as well as my full-size pistols. I do not shoot it for extended sessions, but when I was breaking it in and testing different ammo for reliability, I shot it quite a bot at one session and do not recall it being an issue. 9mm is not a hard recoiling round anyway in that gun.

If not planning to carry it concealed, get the 4-inch for better use as a range gun.
