It's not that I've never heard this, but I can't actually find a reference for it. Here's the OAG: https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/travel. It says just putting guns in your trunk (assuming it locks) is fine and doesn't even mention ammo apart from saying it has to be unloaded.

Is there anything illegal about carrying a loaded magazine in your pocket? I mean for your average non-CCW, non-LEO person heading to the range, or the supermarket?
I think if you are paranoid, and keep your guns locked, unloaded and magazines empty in your range bag, that's great. If you are afraid you might need it for some reason, why not have a loaded mag in your back pocket when you go to the range?
I'm thinking about if you go out to BLM land or something, you should certainly never use up all your ammo, just in case. And where better to keep a loaded magazine than in your back pocket?==================

I often load magazines before I go to the range, but that's just to save time.
Although I don't know for sure, I've never heard of carrying a loaded mag being illegal, and I'm willing to bet it isn't. The reason is that when it comes to the question of carrying a concealed weapon, whether or not your gun is loaded is irrelevant to the question of whether or not you're guilty, since you can mug somebody with an unloaded gun just fine.
On the other hand, what good is having a loaded mag on you going to do if you don't have a weapon as well? I've seen people fire rounds by hitting the case with a hammer, but in an actual fight you'd probably be better off just swinging the hammer.Comment

Any info on this..in bold.Don't quote me, but I'm not sure that the ammunition and firearm have to be in separate containers. The gun cannot be loaded, and a loaded magazine can't be in the gun (even if there is nothing in the chamber), but I'm not entirely sure (please look it up) that the ammo has to be separate.
Loaded magazine...not inserted into magwell.....in the same storage container as firearm (ie a gun vault)?

HANDGUNS Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.
Handgun must be unloaded. No mention of ammunition otherwise.
And in fact, you can apparently just put a handgun in your trunk with no other locking container, if your trunk is the locked container.
"Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.
Pursuant to California Penal Code section 16850, the term "locked container" means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment."==================

IIRC you can have a handgun without a locked case in the trunk as long as the trunk is not accessible from the passenger compartment - either by a trunk latch or a folding back seat that can’t be locked.
Yeah, hatchbacks, SUVs, and Moms old station wagon need to have guns in locked containers. The race is not won to the swift or the strong, but to the one who endures until the end.

This is from the California Highway Patrol website....
If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.
