    Tactical Range Backpacks

I drive a Subaru Outback and It's my understanding that firearms and ammo need to be transported separate locked containers.

I'm looking at purchasing a range backpack like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CQ8G2RO...ing=UTF8&psc=1

Since the handgun pouches are separate and can be locked would it be legal to transport firearms and ammo in this type of backpack?

I have that pack. The individual containers can be locked through the pull strings, but the side panels of the backpack that cover the individual packs have lockable zippers on both the lower and if you get the 4-gun version, the upper side panel as well.

Don't quote me, but I'm not sure that the ammunition and firearm have to be in separate containers. The gun cannot be loaded, and a loaded magazine can't be in the gun (even if there is nothing in the chamber), but I'm not entirely sure (please look it up) that the ammo has to be separate.

As long as you lock it, it's good. The mags can be in the same backpack, loaded or not, just not IN the gun.

I have the same brand, GPS, but different model....the Handgunner. It seems to have more individual pockets than the one you posted. I place 2-4 handguns in the same bottom compartment and then just lock it with a $6 lock through the zipper pulls. The guns sit in a "rack", not in individual gun cases.

Everything goes in there....got the camo one, it's a sweet bag.

Yup, good to go as long as nothing is loaded and you keep the bottom compartment of the backpack locked. I used that bag for a while before upgrading to another model from the same company that carries a few more guns. Highly recommended!

One other thing which I didn't see clarified: The ammo doesn't need to be locked-up at all while in one's vehicle.

Ammo doesn't need to be locked or separate, just not loaded. I personally don't load my magazines either, not because it's against the law (it isn't), but because it would be fairly easy for a loaded magazine to crawl into the gun (via human manipulation, of course).

BTW, "loaded" for a pistol means rounds in the magazine and magazine in the gun. Even if a round isn't chambered, it's still loaded.

Yes you can move with that. As long, I think, as the mags are not loaded and nothing is loaded into the gun. Did you know they make a BIGGER bag?!?!?!?

I like that Handgunner, will it hold 2 full size 1911's and 2 full size Glocks?

Loaded mags are legal, they just can't be in the gun in any way. They can even be in the same bag, just not even remotely in the grip

Easily. I will say that once you start stuffing the pouches with magazines, it does start to get tight when inserting the pouches into the backpack compartment. For 1911, its not a big deal. Larger double stack mags add up though. I just throw mags in the other pockets

My "open" Buckmark does not fully fit in the individual pouches, but only the halo charging ring stick out a little bit. Its got a 5.5" barrel, 1.25" compensator, a TandemKross halo ring and then a FF3 RDS on it so its long and a little tall. But the pouch fits in the backpack just fine and that side panel still locks.

I have the same pack as posted by the OP. It’s the perfect pack for a day at the range and it keeps both hands free

Prior to buying it, I went through more range cases and bags than I care to admit.

You can lock the bottom zipper, or for more security I recall seeing online that there is a pelican case that is a perfect fit inside the pack. I’m not sure of the model number.

Thanks for the info guys. For some reason I thought ammo and guns had to be locked in separate containers in SUV's that don't have locking trunks.

Now I just need to decide if I want the GPS Handgunner pack or the Rolling Handgunner pack for just a few dollars more.
