I have both. Both are great guns, no doubt. I recently purchased a TS and as a range toy it is far superior, IMO. The trigger is amazingly light and helps new shooters like myself look good at the gun range. Lol. The added weight also helps to minimize recoil.

I actually replaced the stock wood grips with stock SP-01 grips, which makes the gun more comfortable in my medium sized hands.

...is it weird that I want a 1911 with a full rail (SA TRP or the RI as example), but when it comes to the TS and SP-01, I want the plain look of the TS?

Not at all - little variety never hurt anyone although I did upgrade some on the TS. The new one will stay stock.....for a while

OP - Where are you located? I can bring both my TS & CGW CZ SP-01 SAO for you to try if you are in South San Francisco.

I have both. A TS for the range, an SP-01 for HD.

The SP-01 can also pull duty as a range pistol, especially when moving newbies from .22LR to 9mm.

The TS, however, cannot pull HD duty. I think most everyone will agree on this. A 'hair trigger' on a defense weapon could send you to prison.

Each has its purpose. If you can afford both, get both. If not, and you want a better all-around pistol, get the SP-01, and modify it in increments (e.g. a 13 lb. hammer spring to start). Get the TS later.

If all you want is a range toy, get the TS. To get an SP-01 to where the TS is, you will need to spend at least as much as for the TS, for maybe similar performance. Not guaranteed.

As far as grip on the TS, you can buy a cheap set of standard SP-01 rubber grips, then trim the bottom flush with the magwell. Voila!! SP-01 grip size on a TS.

Not necessarily. The overall grip circumference on the TS is greater than a SP-01.

What is the difference in size, exactly? Please share this with us, since you seem to know.

In fact, can't you take up so much pre-travel that it effectively becomes SA only?

And for the CZ-75 line, all you really need is the CZ (or CGW) Competition hammer and it will be awesome. The safety needs a bit of filing to make the hammer work or something, I can't remember.

Look, why on earth buy an SP-01 and then convert to SAO when you can buy the excellent CZ-75 SAO ??

I own both... get the TS. You will have to dump a LOT of money into sp01 to get even in the ballpark of the TS.

He's not wrong. I have both, plus the SAO. I just ordered some LOK grips for the TS, but they haven't come yet. The wood grips that come with the TS enhance the hugeness of the TS grip.

The CZ-75 grips (especially if you like Hogue rubber grips) is amazing in the hands. Best ergos (in my opinion, and in my hands) of any gun I've felt.

However, if you shoot two handed, thumbs forward, the size of the grip is not as important as you'd think. Yes, shooting one handed with the TS is not great, but with both hands on it, the weight of the TS and the amount of real estate you can wrap your mitts around makes for a really nice target gun.

OP, the SP-01 is one of the top USPSA Production guns. The TS is no slouch in Limited/Limited 10 division, though that's usually dominated by 2011s. However, in CA, the TS will be the best on roster Limited gun you can get without headaches.

Either is great. For me, for 9mm, I'd go with the SP-01. If you want 40, consider the TS with it's extra heft.

Those two guns are built for different uses.

                            Do you compete at all?

If not, Or; You are thinking about it in the future- Buy the SP-01. Also buy the Cajun Gun Works Pro Package or Production legal kit and install it yourself. This will be a fantastic gun and if you decide to try USPSA production or IDPA in the future you will have a fantastic gun for it.

The CZ TS is probably a nicer gun that most will ever need-
Its great if you are going to be shooting USPSA Limited, Steel Challenge, or need a heavy widebody frame to build an Open gun. The stock single action trigger is typically under 1 lb 14oz, and the 50oz+ frame is made for 1/3rd of a second fast followup shots.

Or do what most of us end up doing and buy both

I own both. I would recommend the Tac Sport for bullseye shooting, steel challenge, Limited Division competition, and general range fun. I would recommend the SP-01 for Production Division or Carry Optics competition and general defense purposes. Unless you pay big bucks for a grip reduction, the TS grip will always be substantially bigger than an SP-01. Ultra thin aluminum grips from CZ Custom will make it manageable, though. You might have to adjust your grip on the draw to hit the stock thumb safety consistently, though. If you want an SA gun, get the TS. If you want a DA/SA, get the SP-01. I wouldn't personally bother converting an SP-01 to SAO.
