If it has to be a Glock, get the 34.

I bought a Gen 4 G35 and then found a used Gen 4 G22 police trade in slide on GunBroker. Now, I can easily change out the slide and instantly have a G35 or a G22 (would be the exact same if you bought a G34 and G17 slide).

I also have 9mm conversion barrels for both slides. The ultimate flexibility. One frame/lower and I can effectively have a G35, G34, G22, G17

I own both.....my duty gun was a G17....got a G34 for fun. From behind the gun you can't tell them apart. The longer sight radius is inconsequential, the minus connector does make a small difference. But there are much better connectors for action shooting. So get what ever. The G17 would save you a little cash so you could get a connector and other sights. Fiber front solid black rear..
If you want change you have to put in your 2 cents, you can't just sit on the sidelines and whine.

                My gawd! So many opinions!

The G17 and 22 frames are identical. The slide and barrel from a G34/35 will go right on to a pre Gen 4 G17 or 22 frame. IE: Gen 3. Not sure if Gen 4 guns will interchange due to the number of changes to the guns between Gen 3 and 4.

The big cutout on the G34/35 slide makes the slide weigh the same as the G17/22 slide. That way they all use the same Recoil Spring.

The Slide release on a G34-35 is a $10 part ans is available from everybody. Every Glock should have one, and I don't see why the factory doesn't just ship them that way. It makes locking the slide back during malfunction clearance much easier.

An Extended Mag Release is a good thing but you really need one with a button on the end. ZEV makes a good one. JP Enterprises made a really good one but stopped because they decided to concentrate on AR stuff. This was dumb!

Not a big fan of the 3.5 lb trigger connector, because until you develop really good trigger control it will cause you to mash, (shots go low to the left) which is undesirable. Best to learn with a 5 lb Connector and then if you must,,, change it later. Again a $5-10 part.

If you get a G22 or 35 you can buy "Conversion Barrels" from Lone Wolf for both 9MM and .357 Sig. You can't do this with a G17/34 as the bolt face is too narrow and the larger cartridge rim won't fit.

Also the G17/34 9MM barrel is smaller Dia (.020 smaller) than the .40 cal barrel and thus the hole in the slide is smaller. This is why you need a "Conversion Barrel" instead of just a plain 9MM barrel.

"Conversion 9MM & .357 Sig Barrels" are the same OD as .40 cal barrels, so they only work with a .40 cal slide.

After reading this, if you actually understand what I wrote you will buy either a G22 or G35 and if you want to shoot 9MM you'll get a Conversion Barrel from Brownell's for $150 and be happy.

You will also want different sights and I recommend Truglo TFO (tritium/fiber Optic sights for @$100.. If you set your guns up like this, you will be happy.

Here's a pic of my G23 which I have a Lone Wolf 9MM Conversion barrel for.

I also have a G35, G21SF and a G36 All of these guns are set up the same way, but for sights, which are different depending on intended use.

In theory (and honestly in practice nobody probably notices)
34 - longer sight radius helps with accuracy.
Longer barrel gives more muzzle velocity so if you handload you can get to absolute minimum power factor with less powder and therefore a touch less recoil.
Though the slide weighs the same the weight is farther out so helps muzzle flip.

17- shorter length means it clears the holster faster to you can get on target faster from the draw.
Shorter length means faster transitions to the next target or it “swings faster”

In practice and reality ... none of those things makes a measurable difference so it’s basically the same gun.

Or muzzle breaks or a combination of both?
