    1911 small radius FPS question

I am interested in this idea of getting an EGW oversixed firing pin stop from brownells, and cuting a small radius to lessen recoil on my 1911... however... the 1911 in question is stainless steel, and I want a stainless steel firing pin stop to match, and all I can bind is blued steel. Can anyone help me find a stainless one? I would also be fine with one that already has a small radius cut in it.

    Thanks

EGW sells them in both blued CS and in SS. You will usually have to do more than put a slight radius on the bottom. EGW FP stops are oversize in thickness and the width. You will have to fit it to the slide (and extractor.)

Why for stainless or for an oversized FPS?

Stainless I just want it to match the gun.

New FPS because I read a small radius one reduces recoil.

A small radius on what? The bottom edge of the fps that cocks the hammer during recoil? That's the only way I can think of that (in theory) the FPS could have an impact on recoil. New to me anyway.

Yep, it keeps the breech locked longer, which is useful for hot loads. I just installed one on my 1911 along with a 22lb recoil spring and it runs great with my +P reloads. 185gr JHP pushed by 9.2gr of Alliant Power Pistol.

I myself can't see how that would do anything, because the barral
starts to tilt down from the slide as soon as the slide starts going back

the firing pin stop with a smaller radius contacts a point lower on the hammer.

This lower point means less leverage against the hammer and hammer spring. This will require more force before the hammer can begin to cock back and delay the action of the slide.

But i dont see how this reduces recoil, just retards the action.

                  Please read this guys/newbies....

Well folks, I am sure you all know by now, that our friend Johnny (1911Tuner), is a genius, right? And most of you must have heard of his preference, for a very specific style of firing pin stop. It's an EGW firing pin stop, with a square lower edge. Johnny uses them, with a very minor break there, just make that edge a bit round and you are done. Actually, here is Johnny's instructions on how to modify the stock EGW firing pin stop: Start with a smooth mill file and cut a light 45 degree

It does work to lessen recoil - I have done this on a couple 1911s. However, since there's no such thing as a free lunch, it does make it more difficult to hand rack the slide.

                    Good luck!

I was wondering how much more difficult it is to rach the slide...

Cock hammer before racking slide. Done.

If you can't rack the slide on a 1911 you need to hit the gym.

It is noticeably more difficult, but not too much. It is, however too much for my petite wife. And yes, cocking the hammer first makes it easier to rack.

Glad to have learned something new. They cost $12.00 from Brownells, might be worth a try. Any effect on reliability?

I have 2 Detonics Combat Masters (3.5" bbl each) and it would be pretty easy to check out side by side.
