BIG recoil difference is between .40 & .45

I'm a recoil junky and love shooting .40s and had always known the .40 recoil is worse than the .45, but didn't realize by how much until I recently acquired 2 RIA double stack with rail handguns in .40 & .45. Both of these pistols are heavy suckers at around 3lbs each, so it's basically an apples to apples comparison. I took both to the range and first shot the .40 putting 100 rounds thru it. Recoil was definitely snappy, but minimal compared to all my other .40 pistols. Then I shot the .45 and it felt like shooting a 9mm! The recoil difference was huge as I had no idea how huge the difference in recoil actually was between the 2 calibers until now! Has anyone else tried apples to apples comparison between a .40 and .45 with the same pistol?

Edit: I mainly shoot .40s for probably the last 7 years and is my caliber of choice vs. 9mm & .45. The point of this thread is the recoil difference between having a .40 & .45 of the SAME pistol & SAME type of ammo.

You bet. I'm not very recoil sensitive to the .40 after years carrying/shooting my XD40. When I shot my brother's XD45 I noticed it a bit. He didn't care to shoot the .40 for very long.

If you like recoil, why don't you have a 10mm?

Try a Glock 29 with some Underwood in it.

I had a USP 40 and it recoiled to random side angles, didn't like that at all. My 1911 TRP shoots straight up and I like it alot.

If you like being punished while shooting, why not just lay your hand on the bench and hit it with a hammer?

Seriously, recoil is subjective, what's comfortable with one may be unbearable to others. My wife can shoot my .454 without complaining, so there you go.

If you have a gun you don't like to shoot, then don't.

I do have a few long guns that I limit to a few shots at a time, being as I'm old, decrepit, and have Rheumatoid Arthritis, but the handguns really don't bother me much.

Well..., maybe those full house .44's and .454's a little.

hahah. 3 pound steel framed .40 and .45 "recoil junky"? You trolling?

Recoil junky like you must have a .44 mag or a .500 right?

                Not even a 10mm? Lame.

OP, I'm not arguing with your conclusion, but you need to provide facts about the ammo: brand, weight, etc.

I like recoil as much as the next guy I have a .38 derringer that sits in the safe it's no fun at all to shoot rather shoot .500 or .460

                      .
I don't know why everyone always says that. My Smith 1006's doesn't have much recoil even with Underwoods. Well the one in my left hand kicks a bit more then the one in my right but I think that's hand strength.

I do have a Glock 20, but the 10mm ammo is expensive! I don't reload.

Umm...I have 9 other .40s (polymer, aluminum, steel). It's just this is the 1st time I was able to do a direct comparison of the SAME pistol in a .40 & .45 to be able to really feel the recoil difference with almost same variables. I do have 2 .44 mags and 1 10mm, but no .500. .40 is mainly what I shoot.

Great point! I used Speer Lawman TMJ ammo in both: .40 180gr vs. .45 230gr

Edit: Oh wait...the .40 may had been 165gr Speer Lawman TMJ
