    First Gun Purchase - Update

So, I met up with Yoshi on Sunday at the gun club he works at. Nice guy, very knowledgeable and professional. He really broke down the different options, and details about all that needs to be considered when buying a handgun. We started with the extremes of polymer strikers to steel hammer fired DA/SA. He really helped me narrow down the field.

When I left I had it down to 4 guns:

    - Sig SP2022
    - Berreta PX4 Storm (which I had not previously even thought about)
    - Glock 17 (ruled out the coveted G19 as it felt to small in my hand - Sorry to the the seemingly omnipresent G19 Fanboys.)
    - Sig P226 (this would have been my first choice if not for the price)

Now, I know I was strongly advised to shoot these guns first, but for practical reasons that was difficult. I live about 2 hours each way from Sacramento, and it's tough to talk a friend in to coming along just to be my range buddy.

But, I feel like at this point I know what I want and I don't need to test shoot them. For an entry level priced gun the decision isn't crucial, I'm sure I'll buy more down the road.

So, the gun I've decided on is the Sig SP2022. This is the preferred weapon of myself and Jason Bourne. The SP felt good in my hand, and the trigger pull was smooth, and the DA pull was the lightest I felt of the other SA/DAs that I tried. I won't go into a full critique of what I did and didn't like about all of them. When I'm at the range I'm sure I'll be renting a G17 for comparison.

Thanks again to Yoshi for his help.

I always wanted an SP2022 but then I went to my LGS that has lots of used guns and I ended up with two 1990s W.German P226s. But hey, SP2022 is a great value.

You should check to see if Sig has the free mags promo they usually offer once a year around summertime.

        Why DA/SA over striker fire?

Good choice by the way and frankly, all of them are.

Sig pro 2022 is not a bad choice but if you could swing it why not get the P226? Trust me once you start shooting well with the sig pro you'll start to wonder how much better you can do with a P226. Short RESET trigger is nice to have as well.

Does not see the point or really the usefulness of a DA/SA gun.... ends up buying a DA/SA gun.

            Congrats!

You made a fine choice for a first gun...just enjoy what you have it’s a great foundation to learn with. I have one and it’s been a great shooter and well built for the price.

2022 is a great gun, the grip texture feels better than my glocks

Don't overthink things! I did the same thing when I started. Just find what you like and get it.

Good choice on the 2022. I didn't realize Sig had a rebate right now, I might pick one up myself!

Only a few years ago the 2022 used to be a $329 gun . Somehow not it's a lot more expensive!

17 years ago I bought my first glock 19 for $479. A few months ago I bought another G19 for $499. Somehow glocks cost the same as they did 17 years ago!

After lots of rounds fired, I call still sell the glock for $450.

After lots of rounds fired thru the 2022 how much can you sell it for????

Good choice. Probably the one I’d pick out of that pack. I agree that you could find a good used p226 for close to the same price pretty quickly. That would be the best way to go IMHO.

Haha, you got me. But, if they made the SP2022 in DAO I probably would have got that. Anyway, I'm going to get some range experience under my belt and then decide about all that.

The striker fired triggers were kind of squishy, I didn't like the short pull right to the break. Or the light weight of the pull - for safety reasons mostly. I also did not like the grip or overall feel of the G17 compared to the sigs or the Beretta. But, like I said I'll definitely be trying the G17 as a rental.

That was my intention, to get a used P226. But they are still up there in the 750+ range, and then you have FFL fees. And if it is being sold outside of CA, which is were the majority are sold, you have to get the -ca model, or at least not buy the 15 round mags, and then buy the 10 rounders which (I was told) are about $50 each. So, at the end of the day it is like $300 more than the SP2022.

If the Glock 19 grip felt short in your hand you can put 17 mags in it. They also make a sleeve that goes on the mag to make it the same size. That way you could have a smaller gun if you ever CCW.
