If do decide to sell it, I will install a Patriot Mag Release or do whatever is necessary to make it legal to transfer in California

Assuming it currently has a "bullet button" style magazine lock...
If you do nothing with it before 07-01-2018, then after 06-30-2018, you will be in felony possession of an assault weapon.

While it retains a "bullet button" style magazine lock, it will be considered an assault weapon.
While in CA, it is illegal (felony) to advertise an assault weapon for sale or to transfer an assault weapon, therefore it will need to be made into a CA legal configuration (options B-I below) prior to doing any of those activities.

In order to legally be able to possess it while in CA, you will need to do one of the following before 07-01-2018:
      A. Register it as an assault weapon.
      B. Make it into a semi-auto pistol with a fixed 10 round magazine.
      C. Make it into a manually operated pistol.
      D. Make it into a single-shot pistol.
      E. Make it into a semi-auto centerfire rifle with a fixed 10 round magazine.
      F. Make it into a semi-auto centerfire rifle without any restricted features.
      G. Make it into a manually operated rifle.
      H. Make it into a single-shot rifle.
      I. Disassemble it into parts and never assemble it while in CA. It is also prudent to store/transport the parts in seperated containers/locations.
      J. Take it out-of-state for storage or to transfer it through an out-of-state FFL dealer.
      K. Sell it to a CA FFL dealer with an assault weapons permit.
      L. Surrender it to law enforcement for destruction.

Just out of curiosity, does separating the upper from the lower suffice?

          Technically, yes.
However, due to prior cases involving convictions of "broken" or "constructive possession" of assault weapons, it is prudent to store/transport those parts in seperate containers/locations.

On one hand you have someone who know's it's "difficult" to own and enjoy and AR Pistol moving forward...

And on the other hand you have someone who wants something that's "difficult" to obtain and/or build.

On top of all that the clock is ticking.

I had a Off Roster handgun for sale/trade once and someone wanted to offer up his AK Pistol for trade. In the back of my head I thought "da fuq am I gonna do with an AK Pistol? I don't even know what I'm gonna to do with my AR Pistol?"

Guess my point is, we'll have to see how valuable these AR Pistols are after July 1st... they're kind of in 'no man's land' right now...

                Thanks.

So, installing a Patriot Mag Release and a 10 round magazine should qualify under "B" below and make it transferable in California, correct? If so, that is the route I will go.

The original bullet button would also accomplish that in theory. But theory ain't what were after is it.

This is hard, lots of folks have time, money and passion in these projects. And it sounds like they all have to register with the man like a sex offender or get rid of them. is that accurate?

Is there any route for owners of "functioning" AR or AK pistol previously legal in CA to not register it as an AW.

That's not going to be a guarantee against being prosecuted. The statute defines a fixed magazine as one which requires "Disassembly" of the action in order to remove the magazine.

The Patriot Mag Release only requires that the action be "Opened" in order for the magazine to be released.

So long as you accept the manufacturer's position that "Opening" the action is the same as "Disassembling" the action, you're on solid ground.

Somehow, I just don't see all 58 District Attorneys and the Attorney General agreeing with that position.

Honestly still very confused, can I make a single shot AR pistol, document it, then convert it to semi auto? Also what is the age requirement because I am only 19.

Seems like the only real hope we have at this point is somehow defeating or partial nullifying the roster (Micro stamping), in order to get pistols back on.

Though it seems that still leaves the hurdles of having all the "features".

My god man, this state literally has a boxed into a corner, they're this close to literally getting everything they want.

VC defense in thousand oaks sells single shot pistol ARs. They will convert it to semi auto for you too afterwards. That's what the guy told me over the phone. He said it was 100 percent legal. This might be the best route for some people to obtain an AR pistol legally.

There are at least two different legal theories that would support prosecution for the illegal manufacture of an "Unsafe Handgun" when a legal single-shot pistol is converted to a semi-auto. There goes the "100% legal" line right there.

I don't know of any LE or prosecutorial agency going that route at the moment, the preference seems to be to generate a test case in civil court.

A converted single-shot pistol would be subject to seizure as evidence of an illegal manufacture in order to generate that civil test case.
