Okay, I've been looking into P80's and recently AR Pistols. This is what I have so far and I want to confirm I have it correct.

1) Buy a serialized 80% (As I will have to volreg July 1st?)
2) Build the pistol to only be single shot VIA a "Sled" or without a gas tube.
3) Document build process, with dated photos, also mail yourself the build photos.
4) Once this is done, you may convert to Semi-auto in a fixed magazine configuration.


Is that looking all fine and dandy?

You are too late on the semi-auto, you can only build single shot in 2018, you may not convert it to semi-auto.

So essential the situation is ambiguous and it's up to you to decide how much freedom is worth the risk.

If we can't even navigate these laws, I can't image a LEO, the DOJ or a judge will be able to.

I have seen prices on complete off roster AR pistols for over $2000 and some over $3000 and in a free state that same firearm is like $1099-$1199. Same exact firearm. Double the price and sometimes triple. A complete joke.

I'll second Quiet's thought on this.

California's firearms laws are quite a mess. IMHO, that the result of writing laws intended to restrict capabilities, rather than conduct, and having to do the level of legislative compromise needed to get a bill passed.

The typical avenue for LEOs to learn what a messed up law really means is to await a published court decision addressing the ambiguity. Traditionally those decisions arise from criminal trials, but that's not the only way to get a published a decision. While civil courts cannot resolve questions of criminal liability, they can resolve definitional issues concerning a firearm's design and function. The "messed up" parts of many statutes fall into this definitional category.

Many California law enforcement agencies have figured out that it's advantageous to for them to have these definitional type issues decided by a civil court and that explains why they are more likely to take a firearm to jail than to take the firearm's possessor to jail.

That seems to be the case from what Ive seen. They just take the firearm and leave it at that, unless they feel the urge to prosecute you, they'll give you a slap on the wrist and confiscate.

I have a Spike's Tactical AR Pistol with 10" barrel in my safe. I have never shot it. May decide to sell it, given that pricing.
