People don't buy DEP's looking for them to be an investment. I have guns that are great investments, but are totally in a different class of shooting. I bought my DEP knowing this but it's a gun that I wanted regardless.
One thing I will say here - If you are buying a DEP with the idea of doing plenty of shooting, then you really are going to want to be loading your own ammo. DEP's can be finicky guns, but having pet loads solves that.Comment

DE is a ton of fun. It's not a gun that you buy for any particular useful purpose, it's a gun you buy for two reasons: (1) because you want it, and (2) because it's just plain fun to own and shoot.
When I take mine to the range, I always let people try it (I shoot at the local private range, so it's different crowd than what you get at public ranges). Never ever has anyone said anything but "wow, that was fun."sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

As for "finicky," don't limp-wrist it and it won't jam. It's a massive slide that you can actually see cycle. Any interruption of the cycle can cause FTE/FTF. Just hold it properly and have fun.sigpicNRA Benefactor MemberComment

I have been thinking about buying a DE too, but before shelling out $1,700+ I want to test fire one, but not sure if any ranges have it as a test gun, the two I've gone two don't. If anyone knows a place in soCal to test one please let me know.Comment

I really want one too! It seems having read a lot of comments owners fall into one of two categories - people who buy it, hardly ever use it, and sell it. And people who buy it, hardly ever use it, and keep it. It seems like a lot of fun! As nearly every comment I read falls into one of those two categories, my plan is to go to Oaktree and rent theirs and shoot it around a few times before deciding whether or not to buy. I’d strongly recommend renting for several times before dropping that much money!Comment

If you like novelty items, then Desert Eagle is one of them. If you don't shoot a lot and don't care about expensive ammo, then why not? Is it fun to shoot it? Yes. Will you and your friends admire it? Yes.
I got rid of mine because I'm more of a shooter than to keep expensive paper weights, so I got rid of my NIB brushed nickel Desert Eagle, because ammo was too expensive for my blood. No, not at all. I'm sure you buy and shoot guns because it brings you enjoyment, no different than collecting cars, coins, or (in the case of my wife) boots and handbags. Life is short; if you can afford one and think you'll like it, go for it!
I shot a .44 magnum DE at the range once. It was a load of fun, and the recoil was nowhere near as bad as I expected. The owner told me he paid $3K (yowzah!) for it at Reed's in San Jose, which included a .44 magnum barrel and a .50AE barrel. Personally--given my income and financial responsibilities--I wouldn't spend that much on a handgun, but this guy was having a blast with it. I think he easily got more than $3K worth of enjoyment out of it.
