    Identification for firearms purchase

Hey folks, last Friday I went to a local gun store to purchase a firearm. I had the usual documents with me, CA driver's license, Firearms safety card, and vehicle registration. I was told that they couldn't DROS that day bc I didn't have the Real ID. I pointed out to the sales guy and his superior that the CA DMV started distribution of Real ID's January of this year but the federal government wouldn't enforcement would until 2020. They still said no, even when I showed them a link to the CA DMV website with the info regarding Real ID cards. I was more annoyed than anything, it wasn't a big issue so I just let it go. I brought in my US passport to get it done. Am I wrong about this? Did this happen to anyone else?

They've been issuing illegal alien IDs to anyone who doesnt opt for a real id since Jan, if your DL says federal limits apply you won't be able to buy a gun.

Thanks for the info, this is my first purchase this year so I wasn't aware of it.

TLDR version and summary of what's going on...

Starting 01-22-2018, CA DMV started issuing out REAL ID compliant CA DL/ID.

The non-REAL ID compliant CA DL/ID are marked "Federal Limits Apply".

If you renew remotely (mail, phone, online), you will automatically get a non-REAL ID complaint CA DL/ID.

In order to get a REAL ID compliant CA DL/ID, you need to go in person to a CA DMV office and bring required documentation.

Per CA DOJ, for the purpose of acquiring firearms/ammunition...

Only the older style unexpired CA DL/ID (will be phased out by 2020) and the REAL ID compliant CA DL/ID are acceptable proof of identity.

The non-REAL ID compliant CA DL/ID (the ones marked "Federal Limits Apply") are not acceptable proof of identity.
^CA FFL dealers will deny transfers to people with these.

I'm new to this world, but can I ask where you went?? My buddy took me to Turners down the street because I wanted a 1911 as my first gun and they had the RIA GI model on sale. I did the same exact thing....CA Drivers License, Vehicle Registration (both with different addresses due to my parents divorce and me bouncing between them and not updating info) along with my firearm cert. They had zero issues taking my deposit and processing the DROS. Get my gun Tuesday

I'd call a few other shops and maybe just take your business elsewhere. If they can't/won't help you. Then there are plenty other shops around :P

^^ Read the op and answers. Did you have th new cadl. Passport useless for dros. Another person that did not get the memo. FFL Makes no difference where you go if you screwed up and did not get the new license. A lot of people renenwed since jan and did not go in with passport/ or birth cert and social security card and other proof of residence.

I did read the links, and the first one was saying DMV basically gave ATF bad information. But for my own personal information. What's a "New ID?" I got mine a couple years ago just due to the usual renewal date coming up, has the holograms and black light label n all that fancy stuff now. Is that was some folks just don't have yet if their current i.d. has yet to expire and require it's owner to renew?????

and yea, you're right. Shopping elsewhere wouldn't matter then. My thought is now invalid lol

I do not believe this story.

Most people don't even know about the real ID.

A passport is never accepted as an id/proof of residence for purchasing guns.

Or, you may have had something odd about you or annoyed them and they just did not want to sell to you.

Any and all gun stores in Calif accept a CDL plus a car registration for any gun purchase.

THAT makes perfect sense. Other than that, I wouldn't see how/why the OP got rejected for even submitting a background check. That's just odd.

If you have the wrong drivers license you cannot do a dros. I have been warning people for a while about this. Every week I tell someone who had no idea. Plus the fact if wrong license and you do not have a passport you will not be able to fly when deadline comes. This is nationwide remember.

                          ^^^

Wrong drivers license means the type of CDL they give to the "less documented" (PC phrase for illegal) folks.

^^^ Yes. No more auto renewals for the new license. Take your docs and make an appointment. I have not been in dmv for a license for 20 years. in 2020 I will make an appointment.

I have tried to follow the changes in the California Driver license. I've seen the "federal limits apply" notation. Tell me i'm wrong, if a person was to renew their license starting this year, and did not ask for a Real Id, their new license will look exactly like the ones issued under AB60 to illegal aliens. Say it ain't so ?
