I wouldn't necessarily consider a 5 inch slide/barrel assembly long. What is it about long pistols that you don't like?
If you are set on Springfield and you have a few more months to go before you get it, save up a little and get a loaded model. Although I think the vertical serrations on the slide and no front cocking serrations that the GI and Mil-Spec use look much nicer than the serrations on the loaded, the loaded model offers some nice (I think necessary) upgrades. Chiefly, I think the beavertail grip safety and the better sights are really great upgrades. The feel of the trigger is also an important consideration, does anyone know if the triggers are better?
