If you have to buy in CA, then I think the Gen 4s don't offer more than the gen 3s for the price premium demanded (ie; not worth it). I have the gen 4 Glock 17 and 34, bought during the SSE days. And I'd say I don't think they offer anything that the Gen3 doesn't provide. Event he grip size thing is not much of a bonus.
What about the MOS feature? Wouldn't it be easier to just purchase the Gen 4 MOS vs buy and installing a comparable optics solution for a Gen 3?

        Thanks for responding.

If you go Gen 4 or 5, it will just need 10 rd mags and an FFL that understands the process.
Does this hold true for the Glock 34 as well? I see it on the Calif. list until 1/1/2019 as well. I was talking to gun shop about the 17 and he up sold me on the 34 MOS. So Gen 3 is off the table and it's looking like the G17 Gen 4 or 5 and if possible, I'd like to go with the G34. Admittedly though it's confusing with one person saying, all you need is an intrafamily transfer and another saying you need to get a Single Shot exemption. The (SSE option is too much work for me personally, not worth it).

You don’t need an SSE. I don’t even think SSE is a legal option any more but I could be wrong.

Your out of state dad can gift you any nonroster handgun, as long as he doesn’t include any mags over 10 rounds.
