Actually, the frames are different. The Gen 4 is a SF frame. With no backstraps installed, it has a smaller grip girth than a Gen 3. For people with small/medium hands it makes all the difference in the world. It gets your fingers closer to all the controls including the trigger.
Adding the small backstrap restores the size to a Gen 3, and adding the large backstrap makes it even larger for people with big hands. The Gen 4 can be tuned to fit the user. The only way to tune the Gen 3 for a smaller person is to shave some plastic.
The Gen 4 is the way to go, unless the Gen 3 just happens to fit you perfectly. I guarantee nobody in a free state is buying Gen 3 G26. In CA it is a different calculus because of the roster and the effect on Gen 4 prices. But if you need a G26 that fits you, and the Gen 3 doesn't - then don't cheap out. I sold my Gen 3 26 and 27 the second I put my hand around Gen 4 models.
