    Smith M & P

I just bought a Smith & Wesson M & P in 9mm, full sized with 4 1/4" barrel. Not much of a plastic gun fan, but what the hell - bought a 1977 Ruger Security Six stainless and a Para Ordnace to not feel too "dirty" .....

Am I correct that the gun will accept a 5" slide and barrel as a straight swap out, no fitting and no "gunsmith only" work?

I see Brownells has such upper kits, but I really don't want to spend more on a barrel and slide than I did on the whole darn gun. And I don't need "porting" or the inserts. A plain old 5" barrel and factory slide would be OK.

You are correct. Its supposed to be interchangeable..... although I had a bit of a fit issue where the trigger bar was pushing the safety plunger causing it go out of battery. I sent to SW and the fixed it right away with out issues. Mine might have been a rare case cus no one else seems to have had issues with theirs.

edit: just remember when buying your slide kit..... they sell 2 kinds (with and w/o mag safety)

Thanks. The one I bought doesn't have a safety, will have to wait until I pick up to check on mag safety. Really didn't check it out that much.

      I don't suppose I can put a 40 S & W slide & barrel on this thing too?

You indeed can put the 40 SW slide and barrel on it as well.

Mag safety can be easily removed in a few mins, plenty of DIY's on google search hon how to remove it.

You can remove the entire mag safety and sear safety assembly. They are not required to function the pistol. The same applies to all M&P line pistols.

Some people use a pen spring to maintain the sear safety, but I don't know of anyone that actually uses the sear safety. We just all pull the trigger to release the slide. Obviously ensure that the firearm is clear.

I put a 5" ported CORE slide on mine. Fit's fine.

Mine still has the mag safety. I always use the sear deactivation lever.

No safety should be able to fire without a mag and no LCI, right?

I have a Shield with a safety, no LCI and is capable of firing without a mag. Like to hear more and see pics of the Ruger and Para.

The only difference between the mag safety and no mag safety units is the warning label on the slide.

Thanks all for the info. I picked up an Apex parts trigger, sear & springs kit. Helped a friend install the same on his Compact a while ago and liked the results.

Good to know a 40 slide/barrel can be mounted, which I'd presume means a 357 Sig barrel can be used too. A 5" 357 Sig would be kind of fun.

I still very much like the "old blued" stuff but have to admit, all this easy interchangeability is kind of fun to play with. Heck of alot easier than old Colt or Smith revolvers and the parts are all over the place, and cheap.

So let's say a M&P .40 (old CA on roster) with a mag disconnect feature. Can accept a newer C.O.R.E. slide, as long as the mag disconnect safety, and seat safety are to be removed?

The mechanical difference between mag disco model and standard model is in the frames. The slides have no mechanical difference, only the print on the side of the slide "capable of firing without a magazine".

If simplicity means reliability, removing those lawyer parts should theoretically increase the gun's reliability, making it close to "glock simple".

Remember, if you buy the additional slide you will need to purchase an Apex Ultimate Striker Block kit or transfer the one from your current slide. If you have a non-CORE slide it is a pain so I would recommend buying a second kit.

And, others are correct about the slide kits: the only difference is the warning message printed on the side.

I bought an Apex striker block kit to replace the factory version. I'm not sure what a CORE or non-CORE slide is. What I'd like to do is simply find a 5" 9mm slide (with sights, and barrel) and once I do upgrade to an Apex kit on that one too.

CORE is the Competition Optics Ready Equipment version for an optic. With the CORE version changing the striker block is a mere allen screw. On the non-CORE you have to push the rear sight out to replace.

The slide will just require the striker block not the full kit. Apex calls it the Ultimate Striker Block kit.
