    Gritty Trigger Question

    Hi everyone.

I regularly shoot a Les Baer 1911. It is amazing. Trigger is fantastic. A little bit of resistance for a millimeter then crisp break.

Recently when I've been shooting it has been really windy and dusty and dirty. It looks like some dust has got itself into the trigger mechanism - at least that tiny fraction of a millimeter gap where the trigger fits inside the body. Now it feels like there a bit of dirt or dust where the trigger engages the body of the gun. Now when I pull the trigger it feels like there's some dust in there and it doesn't feel as crisp as before. I may be crazy and I might have seen dust go in and am imagining this sensation with trigger pull.

Any recommendations for how to get the dust - imaginary or real - out?

    Thanks!
    Keith

Remove the trigger and clean it and the trigger track in the frame.

Detail strip and try using dry lube like teflon on the trigger bow area to prevent attracting dust. I still prefer light oil on my competition/range 1911s, but I don't take those out in muddy and mucky places.

You can do a detail strip and clean everything inside. I detail strip all my 1911s every 1k rounds whether they need it or not. It's routine maintenance and it gives me a chance to see if there's any premature wear on any of the parts.

If you've never stripped down your 1911 now is the time to learn. It's not hard at all, but take care not to damage the finish, and if you don't know how to prevent the "idiot scratch" learn how not to do it (google). There are literally dozens of videos on youtube. Here is a good one:

Wow. It's broken? I don't want to use it if it's dangerous. If you PM me maybe I can send it to you to dispose of it?

I am so grateful for your help! You may have saved my life!

Yup, detail strip, clean, oil and should be good to go.
I don't think it is dust. Probably more the dirt and carbon from using the gun. It can blow into everything, and stay there especially if you run your gun super wet.

                  Les Baer with gritty trigger...

BTW I was at Oaktree about a week ago shooting at the pistol range. Closer target between 5-7 yards, probably closer to 7 yards rather than 5; farther target 7-10 yards, probably closer to ten. Two hands standing, no support. The wider groups are mostly from the person I was shooting with. I was on fire that day. Never shot like it before. This is from the LB...

If you are uncomfortable detail strip it, use compressed air to blow the dirt out.

                      Cleaning the 1911...

I've of course cleaned it like normal but not down to brass tacks...

Hey how do you get pictures to show up automatically instead of have to hit a link?

Watched the video. I didn't realize how little I'd been cleaning before. 100% guarantee that if I broke it down that far I'd have a bunch of parts I don't know what to do with! I'm thinking air compressor and Ballistol.

Oh and while I'm at it...

This is what the Les Baer shoots like. I'm not particularly good but IT shoots like crazy!

Get some WD-40 with the magic wand attachment. Remove the slide and grips. Wear safety glasses. Blast the crud out. Manipulate the trigger and hammer while you do it. Shake off the WD-40 without having the frame fly out of your hand and hit the ground. Reassemble.
