    S&W 66 Combat question

What's a mint early 80's specimen worth? It's Stainless with a 4" barrel and a rd count of 50. Paper box and paperwork are included. A friend of mine wants to sell it and we need a fair price for both himself and I. Educated input will be appreciated.

Fair price where? Outside CA $350 - $600; in CA $650 might get you a beater. If it truly has 50 rounds down the pipe and 95% or better, correct stocks, etc, then more like $750 - $1K.

4th Edition of the S&W Standard Catalog says $350 for Very Good, $575 for excellent, and $800 for NIB, but those are typically real world prices, not CA.

^^^^^ Great advice. A model 66 (dash??) full set in mint condition should get $850 - $1000 if it has the original grips on it.

^^^ Pretty much nailed it. If it's truly 50 rounds, looks the part, and has all the candy to go with it, that's a $1,000 piece in this state.
Buy made in USA whenever possible.

Average asking price is $800 nationwide. With box/papers +minty is an easy $1K in California.

Very fair. Make sure to post pics when you get it. We don't see enough wheelguns on Calguns.

Also, if you don't like the trigger when you get it look into the Wilson Combat reduced power spring pack from Midway. It is really easy to do and runs about $15. Most K frames have pretty sweet triggers from the factory though.

The 66 from that era, not so much. A lot of them had stainless internals that tended to gall. Any good gunsmith should be able to do a nice action job for fairly cheap.

That is a good deal on both sides.

I was out shooting a S&W revolver yesterday. The S&W is a great overall handgun. Enjoy.

Smart move, and it will probably shoot, look and feel better than a new $1100 "performance center" piece.

Yup... and like all the pre lock S&W magnums...it will only increase in value. If I were the OP I would keep the gun and not fire it. It should be a safe queen. Find a M66 with honest holster wear / use on gunbroker and import it into the state under the Single Action Exemption to have as a "shooter"
