My 4'11" fiancee didn't like my Beretta 92's huge grip and long trigger reach, and wasn't a fan of the plastic guns for cosmetic reasons (but liked the triggers). She ended up falling in love with revolvers after shooting my brother's S&W 686+ Pro series. She ended up wanting a full size wheel gun in 38 Special because it soaked up recoil and felt like a .22LR. I tracked down a half-lug 6" model for balance, and she can shoot +P .38 Special all day long. She's still not a fan of .357 Magnum, but at least the option is there.

Moral of story: if you want a woman in your life to pick a handgun, help her try as many types, styles, and calibers as she can, and let her decide what she likes best.

Have you considered a .22 LR? There are still a bunch of Browning Buckmarks, Walthers, and 1911 clones on the roster.

What's the downside? .22s are fun, economical, and pretty reliable. They may not be the best SD gun, but will do the job.

The benefits to your wife are that she learns proper technique with the .22 then steps up to a larger caliber if she wants to. That's how I got started, and, I'm betting, most of the people on this forum did.

Brought the wife up to the range last week so she could familiarize herself with basic handgun firing. I have a CZ SP01 as well as a S&W FS 9mm. Both were rather large for her hand size. I have the medium strap on the S&W and do not want to put on the smaller strap every time she shoots... not to mention that the S&W is my HD gun, so that is out of the question.

So my question to all of you that have wives who participate (and might have smaller hands) what are some quality firearms which might accommodate the small hands of a woman and that are still on the roster?
First congratulations on seeing to your wife's needs and wanting her to have something that suits her.

Recognize that she'll need to be involved in the process. Rarely can even a devoted and caring husband guess right on the first try.

Last I checked the Springfield EMP was on the roster. If it still is, take a look at one. It's a scaled down 1911, reduced not just in barrel length but in every dimension. I bought one for my wife (after she'd admired one in the store and commented on how well it fit) and surprised her with it one Christmas - yes, breaking my own rule. But she loves that gun, and is good with it. She's qualified with it for her CCW permit and I have seen her repeatedly ring a steel plate at 60+ yards slow fire which is mind-blowing to me. Yes with a 3" pistol. Unbelievable.

It likes the Winchester Ranger ammo, which was our go-to for years. When we updated our defensive ammo selection to Hornady Critical Duty we discovered all of our pistols digested it just fine... except for the EMP... go figure. So we still use the Ranger for that one... YMMV.

Her XD pistols also seem to suit her well and she quals with these as well. I've don't think I've heard from ANYONE that the XD didn't fit them reasonably well, kind of a remarkable feat across a wide variety of hand shapes & sizes. Worth looking at.

CZ P-01 is on the roster and nice for person with small hands, and its heavy enough to reduce some of the recoil.

I have large hands and my wife is fairly petite, and we recently went through this.

In the end, I wanted a 9mm that she could comfortably hold, that would work well for the range. Since she is relatively new to firearms and not committed, I wanted something that I would enjoy shooting as well.

In the end, we went with an SD9VE, but I shoot it mostly. It's fairly slim for a double stack, has enough size for my comfort, but she's comfortable with a good grip on it. She also liked the Shield, and oddly enough the 92FS. In the long run, she mostly ends up shooting the P22 and is working her way up to the 9mm at a slower pace.

My mom really likes the SP101 357, loaded with 38 sp. Sister is a die hard CZ fan.
