P226 compatibility question

Hello everyone. Just had a question I hoped someone could answer, I tried looking around online and in my local store but I can't get a definitive answer. So before calling or emailing Sig I thought I might ask here first.

I saw a used P226 at my LGS that was an agency trade in for a good price. It is a German made, railed frame with a Sigarms NH, USA slide. It's in .40 which is fine, but my question is will a 9mm conversion kit (the whole slide) fit a railed German frame P226?

i remember reading about this on one of the Sig forums...

if i recall correctly compatibility depended upon a couple of things....frames and slides had to be from the same generation. Basically new 40 frames did NOT fit older 9mm slides.

...and regardless of generation you can never go from 9 to 40 (but 40 to 9 could be ok).

Cheapest would probably be using the Bar Sto conversion barrels for the 226, where you can fit a 9mm barrel (and of course use 9mm magazines) in your 40.....

interesting, i just went to the SigSauer site and they list a conversion kit (https://www.sigsauer.com/store/calib...6-9mm-blk.html) you might want to call them.

Best advice however would be to call Bruce Gray (Grayguns).

That's just a plain USA made 226, not a nicer/collectible german 226.

Don't waste money on a conversion kit, just buy a 226 in 9mm and be done with it.

If you TRULY want 40/9mm in the same 226, which you'll grow out of quickly, best to buy the conversion kit directly from SIG.

There are several locking blocks which determine the slide/barrel compatibility. If you have the universal block the newer 9mm kits should fit, otherwise you might need a specific legacy kit or to replace the locking block making your current .40sw barrel/slide useless. Something like that.

All 226's are the same... mostly. If it's .40 all you need is a 9mm slide and barrel. There is only one locking insert for the 226 so no need to worry about that. Because you are going from .40 to 9mm there is no need to replace the ejector. The 9mm P226 uses a different ejector than the .40.

Why don't you answer with expert advice, provide insight with no "feelz", and give advice why caliber exchanges are important and he should definitely spend around $1400 on a silly p226 .40/9mm combo, not including mags and ammo.

The 226 locking insert is the same. If you had a 229 then you may have to change the locking insert when switching calibers.

I have a 226 frame and interchange my 0.40 and 9mm (from the X-change kit). Just remember if you change sights, the 0.40 has a #6 front sight, and the 9mm has a #8 front sight.

What I'm hearing is you want a 9mm p226. I seriously doubt you will utilize the conversion kit or shoot both calibers more than a few times.

Just buy a 9mm model instead and save money.

The Sig X change kit will work fine. Not the cheapest conversion but it's all Sig. The frames between 9mm and .40 s&w are nearly identical difference being the ejector. You will be fine. Nice score. I have a PD turn in in 9mm and love it.


I would add that the frames changed in the mid 90's. You can confirm with Sig as to compatibility by sending them the serial #

No need to change the ejector.

Just a thought. Unless the gun is in really good condition (barely shot) that price is a little high. Also be prepared to change out all the springs. This is just good maintenance and they are offered as a kit. Got mine from Midway (only people who had it in stock at the time). Also the SRT kit is very popular.

In a free state $599 might be a little high for a used plain sig. But it is an off roster so he is going to pay a premium. At $599 it won't sit on the shelf long.
