I have the 9 and the 40. Get the 9. The 40 is punishing. It is not a comfortable gun to shoot, and that means you won't train with it was much as you would with the 9. And the ammo is more expensive. So why bother?

The only thing I have read was that some people were having problems with the safety lever clicking on when the carried it. I do not know if that problem was specific to the California version or the other version with a thumb safety.

I have the 9mm with safety, but not the CA shark fin model.

I like the option of having the safety and to be honest, I am not worthy to carry concealed so safety or not is irrelevant to me.

I've heard the rants (from Yankee Marshall when I used to watch his rants) about the safety. I don't carry mine so I can't say if it's true or not that the safety flips itself on and off by itself.

Depends. the 9c/40c is a fatter gun and a lot harder to conceal. OP didn't say whether or not that's a contributing factor.

First I've heard of someone having issues with theirs. I've got 300 rounds or so through mine and haven't had any issues yet but clearly I need to at least double that number and see how it performs.

Or would 8+1 work for you and you could use a thinner gun?
This is something to consider. I've got both, and I've found myself debating whether or not to sell my 40c since it never leaves the house since the shield has come home.

Dunno about better or worse but I can vouch for the 9mm conversion barrels. Got 1K rounds through my M&P40 with a 9mm conversion barrel in it and haven't had a single issue with it.

I would push you toward an M&P Compact if roster isn't an issue but if it has to be a Shield go with the 9, no safety.

If you want a bigger caliber skip the 40 and go 45.

I have a 40 and have zero issues shooting it or with discomfort despite the above comments.
                        You definitely know you're shooting a small 40 tho..lol.

If you're gona be dealing with extra pop you might as well make a bigger hole with the 45

I want to test a Shield .45. But never thought a ported version of an SD gun was a good idea. Seems to me that most SD events happen at night and concerned about the flash.

Too bad you have to decide so soon. The 2.0 version will be out shortly after they sell off the current stock. (re: their current rebate program)

Sold my Shield 9 and will replace it when I get to OH. The .45 is a good possibility, but like I said, I'd like to try one first. But I will be waiting for the 2.0s

S&W 40 shield. Love the gun, easy to shoot, and my #1 conceal carry.

what calibers do you prefer? 41 mag 38/357
How big or small are your hands? large to x large I like large grips.
Do you currently own SIMILAR guns that could rule out another? Walther PPK/S 380

The PPKS is off limits for a carry piece. German 99% condition. Then a Sig Sauer P2022 Jamming issues make it not reliable.
If i were in that situation, I would go 9mm, and just decide if you want a safety or not. my safety's have never gotten in my way, but some would rather not have em
