Colt Trooper

Don't know much about these but I bought one on consignment a few years back. My first DA Colt finally made it to the range today. After fumbling with the cylinder release (it works backwards) I fired 6 rounds at 7 yards to see if it worked.



Turns out it works quite well. Its just so ugly compared to a model 19.

If the cylinder release works "backwards" for you, then the cylinder rotation works "backwards" also

I think the Colt Trooper is a really nice revolver. I picked up this Trooper MKIII about a year and a half ago from my LGS. It shoots tight groups. I like the wide target trigger and hammer.

Maybe these are the next pythons? I've had a long love affair with the MKIIIs.

While they are not as nicely finished as Pythons, I think they are great guns. I picked up a Trooper (not a MkIII) several years ago and shoot it from time to time. To tell you the truth, it is every bit as accurate as my Python.

The Trooper in your pictures is the same frame gun as a Python. Except
for the finish and a vented rib barrel it's identical. The newer Troopers
have a different cylinder.

I'm normally a S&W guy but a few years back I picked up a NIB Trooper from the widow of a collector. She had so many guns to sell she packaged them into 5 gun lots. If you wanted one of the guns in the lot you had to buy all 5. Well, there were a couple of S&W's in one lot that I really wanted so I bought it and the Trooper came with it. I kind of like it and just can't bring myself to trade it off.

What year? I bought mine in about 1979. My older brother bought one in about 1973 and ,because he was a re-loader, I put a zillion rounds thru his. I eventually bought one too...I almost one-upped him and bought a Python which at the time was about $125 more than the $200 Trooper. I'd like to have a do-over on that decision.

I bought mine in 2000. It was used when I bought it. I think I paid $300 for it and it is probably in 97% condition with only a little bluing wear at the muzzle.

Yes, I believe the original Trooper (til '69) has the same lockwork as the Python, it's just not as tuned and overall polished as the Python.

The later Trooper llls have a simpler lockwork and level of refinement....still good shooters.
